I started getting this snapping sound under the hood. Sounds just like a spark arcing somewhere. At lesast thats what i think it is. I checked all the wires at the cap and plugs and they are tight. Started up in the garage last night and turned off the lights and didn't see any arcing. Could be in the side the cap? I thought if they crack that it would miss and not arc. This is on of those cap types with built in coil.

Is there a way to trouble shoot this or do you just have to start buying new parts and replacing until you find the culprit?

Yes it can. Moisture can cause it as well as a bad cap. The cap can form carbon tracking. The insulation breaks down and a line of carbon forms in the material between 2 points. Car should run pretty lousy if that's what's really happening.

You can also try spraying a fine mist on your plug wires with a bottle of water. You'll find out if there are any leaking plug wires.
