Who has done radiant barrier and did it really help? What type did you Spray in ?
foil??



I am about to add about 680SF to our house. Should I add a separate a/c system or just replace mine with one bigger system ? Pros and cons for either?

keep in mind this is TX and its hot here

I've not heard of a spray in radiant barrier. The one down here is silver
faced type that is stapled to the bottom of the truss. The space on top
of it and the roof catches a lot of heat.

I'm in attic's a lot (ac contractor) and I can tell you there is a world of
difference!

You didn't say how many sq ft your home is but the largest home unit is
5 ton and with that much added foot you may be over that. My preference
is two units anyway. Nice to have that backup if there is a problem with
the main unit. Also your bills will be less:thumbsup:

Install the reflective foil faced version that is attached to the bottom of the rafters. Install soffit intake vents and a good ridge exhaust vent and be amazed at the effectiveness in keeping the heat out of the attic space. The shingle warranty will be retained with this type and voided with many other type radiant barriers. If the spray foam type is used it is not as effective and has to be vapor permeable to avoid structural damage over the years. Do not depend on the salesman of the radiant barrier to give you the best advice. This from 30 years in the shingle manufacturing business as the Technical Manager, FWIW, Ed.

Foil - backed barrier is worth it. A/C raises many questions. What is the addition going to be used for? Packaged unit or split system? Insulation value of existing and addition livable space? How does existing unit work for the area it is conditioning? How old is existing unit? What brand and SEER rating is existing unit? Flat roof or pitched? Flex duct or metal?
