I posted this over in the suspension area and was told I might get a response over here.

Anyway….

Thought I pick some brains here. Just put in my blown big block, which makes all kind of power, as you can imagine my suspension in the back is all over the place (hop, etc....)

I have read many post on this and in all honesty am more confused than before? (I guess fatigue was setting in last night) LOL

I keep reading about these SSM bars. Is that still the way to go these days? What about upper control arms is there something that will work well or compliment with the SSM bars as well? And front suspension, anything there I should do? QA1 Shocks seem to be the hot item.

I do want to car to hook nicely but would still like to have "some" street handling if you know what I mean. (oh - will the sway bar work the Jegster SSM's?)

And finally what tires would you guys recommend? 90% driven on the street, but a weekend or so at the track might happen

Any enlightenment on this would be greatly appreciated – thanks everyone,

Dan

 Blown Big Block & Traction, just don't go together.I have SSM bars, adjustable uppers, comp eng 3-way shocks Frnt&Rr,M/T et drags,Traction I don't have.Even if you do get it to hook on a 10" tire you WON'T hook it on the street. But it sure is fun trying. If you do get it to hook let me know what the secret is.

Sorry i'm not more helpful...or optimistic.Luckly it's really cool to smoke the tires at a 50mph roll.:D

Dan,
First of all...Don't get discouraged!
I was told the same crap when I first set out to build the 540.

"All the HP and TQ is great but you'll never get it to hook..."

That's bull. It'll take some time and a few bucks but it can be done.
Mine was pulling 1.40 60 fts last weekend at a track rental day.
And anyone here that's seen my '70 run on the street, in street trim, will also vouch that it hooks.

Don' get me wrong...I'm not trying to discourage anyone. But an 800hp N/A motor is completely different than an 800hp blower motor.Blower motors come on so hard that without peddling it or electronic aids that kind of brute force is extremely difficult (not nesesarily impossilble) to hook on a 9-10" tire esspessally a street tire.
However, you can still make the most of it.Some people will argue that relocating the upper control arms is better than relocating the lowers. Most people will say that QA1 shocks are essntial to good traction. You can use "trick" springs on the front of the car to get max weight transfer. And remember you have an extra 90lbs on the front of the car that you need to deal with too.

Thanks Everyone for the replies. I figure any improvement over a stock rear suspension would be light years of where I am now. I mean, don't get me wrong tire smoking is cool, but I would like to transfer some of that power in to speed.

So Jegsters SSM's seems to be the general consensus on this board, at least for starters. Now the adjustable uppers? Worth it? Anyone?

And ET/Street Radials - I hear the Mickey Thompson are ones to get. Again anyone - Please Help? ;-)

p.s. Bill – thanks for the encouragement!

Travis,
My comments were absolutely NOT directed at you personally.
I was simply encouraging Dan to see his project thru.
I have a good friend that has a healthy blown BBC in a mid '80s full size Blazer.
100% street driven...never seen the strip. It too hooks! ;)
BTW...I've got that extra 90 lbs up front you mentioned covered. I run an OEM style mechanical water pump, clutch fan w/shroud, alternator, power steering, March serpentine belt system, and the 39 lb Optima battery is in stock location. ;)

I replied to your PM Dan, good luck gettin her to hook. Todd is much more knowledgeable in the geometry part, but mine don't do too bad for what it is. Simple, yet works right now, unless I try to use the nitrous off the line.

Hey Bill, arent you using the HRpartsnstuff antiroll bar?

Bob - Thanks! I am sitting here as I type looking through the Jegs catalog making a wish list....LOL

Bill - I see you are in Georgia, have you ever been to the Ocean City. Maryland Car Show in May? It's 4 days of non-stop hot rods running up and down Ocean Highway, you should trailer your 70 up this (next 06) year. Love to hook up (no pun intended) with you.

Yes. Made a big difference in MY car.
I went to a Buick track rental this past weekend. Quite a few GN and GS cars were running this bar. Actually had a couple of those guys comment about seeing one on a Chevelle. ;) Like it's some kind of secret...

The Ocean City weekend sounds like fun! If you think of it, remind me in the spring.

I use double adjustable uppers and lowers in stock location, -2* pinion angle, and an hrpartsnstuff antiroll bar, m/t drag radials, seems to work real well, and corners well also.
