Congrats on the swap, now for the details.

Advancing the timing can cool down your engine, I would expect your engine to like 10 or 12 degrees of initial advance. I run my 496 with 24 degrees initial advance. You should check to see that your mechanical and vacuum advance are properly working. If your advance is lagging that will heat up the engine.

Fan shrouds are useful if there is more than a few inches between the radiator and the fan. I run my '65 with no shroud and I drive it everywhere with no cooling issues. In super heavy traffic jam conditions my '65 gets to ~ 200 degrees - but it can do that all day long. Your 3 row radiator should be fine unless it is clogged up.

I think that you may find that your carb needs to be tuned for your engine - I'll bet it is a little lean in mixture.

Your starter and battery may not be up to the task. Is your starter a high torque version?

I'm running 16 degrees advance on my 396(402). 3 core rad with a fan shroud. No cooling problems at all. Temp hits 180, that is what the thermostat is, and stays there all the time.

I need to play with the advance because it's not coming in soon enough but it starts good and runs cool.

no i dont have a high torque starter just used the one off my SB which is brand new my timing is at about 11 or so i purchased a new battery today and the baby started right up, i went on about a 30 minute cruise and it ran great the engine heated up to about 210 on a 70 degree day here in texas when i got home i tried to recrank it and it would barely turn over while the engine was still hot, it took me 4 tries to crank it, why is it doing this is this normal on a newly built engine thanks for the help

I noticed you are running headers, the starter could be getting heat soaked check that you may need to change to a remote realay or a starter that AC Delco makes to run on the deisel application. It is a smaller gear driven starter. You may also have the timing advanced too high which will cause the engine to turn slow when hot.:clonk:

I would use more than a 550 cca battery. It is always a safe bet to use a 750 or better.

I understand that the way to tell if you have a high torque starter or not is if you have a spacer on your solenoid you have the high torque starter. The high torque has more windings.

A new starter might solve your starting problems.

Another thing you might want to check to see if your grounds straps are hooked to your valve covers or the engine. The ones that come from the factory usually run from the firewall to the valve covers. I have seen many starting problems arise from those because they were just left hanging off the firewall.

If you don't have a new 3 row radiator I would put a 4 row in that baby. A marginal 3 row is not going to keep her cool.

The fan shroud usually helps in traffic but at highway speeds it should not matter.

I have alway drilled a couple little 1/8" holes in every thermostat I put in now just to make sure that if the stat gets stuck I still have some water going through plus I think it keeps it circulating better. Hope this might help some.

Get you an AC/Delco Hi torque mini starter like the ones used on a Vortec engine. It is small enough to stay away from manifolds/headers, but has the torque to turn over the BBC with no problems whatsoever.

(WHIN) today i crank up the 396 and let it idle for about 5 minutes then i started hear a whinning noise coming from the back of the engine i thought first it maybe the clutch not adjusted properly and maybe it was the throw out bearing i mashed down on the clutch it didnt stop , then it just quit. a few minutes later it whinned again for a few seconds i wonder whats causing this
