Anybody ever pull or install these headers from the top of the eng. with no heads on ?? this would be on 70 to 72 with 454 and T400. Mine being a 71. I want to pull the headers and have them coated at a local business. The Heads are not off as I ask this but in a few minutes there coming off for some Hi-Po work. I know the starter will need to be removed, Has anybody done it ???? Can it be done??? Looks tight....Thanks

I used Hooker Comps on a big block in a 72. This was a new install after removng small block. The only way I could get the headers on (heads on engine) was to come in from the bottom, with car jacked up 20" or so on jack stands.
I had to removed motor mount bolt on drivers side and let engine swivel up on drivers side (using engine hoist), to get required clearance. My clearance issues seemed to be with the block as I remember it...don't think heads being removed would help.

to get them on my sbc with the head off on the drivers side required jacking hte car up about 20 inches also, the angle they go up is very odd and there is a single way they slip through the hole so be prepared to scratch any new paint trying to figure it out :(

it was harder getting that thing out than it was to get it back in though..

UPDATE: Removed my Hooker headers today. With heads off they will not come off from the top of engine. Rasied the car about 20 inches and the Pass. side just about fell out with starter still on engine. Drivers side Header a real Bit-- to get out. Had to raise the car higher which the jack would not do. So a few wood blocks later and the bottom of the front license plate 31 inches off the ground and a hell of a lot of angles of attack to pull that header off it finally came out. Did NOT have to raise engine. I'm trying to keep in mind the angle I used for it to come out so I can use the same to replace it.

Chirp 08, your right about the odd angle, man....Also the added scratches I saw when I took it out. I usually use a some type of blanket to cover headers when I install them to keep scratches down..Last set was many years ago. Wondering if I should just by new or have old ones coated.
