I love that my 69 has the high beam switch on the floor. I never need to move my hand off or along the steering wheel. I think all new vehicles have it in the turn signal. Some click toward the driver, some away. Niether seem as nice to me as the floor switch.

Why did this feature eventually change? What do you all prefer?

I think they were moved to make the American cars more "International" about the same time all of the symbols showed up on the knobs. In Europe you signal passing with your high beams and with a clutch going on, its easier with the 'toggle the stalk' method.

I was thinking the same thing just the other day. On the floor is so much better. Gives my left foot something to do on long night trips too.

It's all about simplifying the wiring. They (manufacterers) save hundreds of thousands of dollars every year by only having to run one harness and one switch to accomplish all those things (high beams, turn signals, wipers, washers, and cruise control).

DANG Pat, I'm probably the only one here who knows about floor starters! By the way, did you ever start a 55 Buick?

It seems like you never see these floor switches anymore but i love them. I would have to say one of the last cars i know of that have them would be like My dad's 1990 Ford F-150 truck he lets his laborers drive. Might be the same on some Fords a bit newer anybody know of any newer ones?

I'm still missing starter buttons on the floor. Needed coordination to toe the button and heel the gas "just right" while pulling out the choke!
I remember those days well, however for those of us that lived in the right place, it was just easier to park them on a hill and then just coast start them, especially in the winter.

This was another reasons stick cars were better than the slush boxes. Always easy to get a little push to start her up. It was hell on the bumpers tho. Anyone remember getting the bumpers locked up?

Wrong!

Starter button on the dash too. 1950 Chev.
Key on, hit the button.

And, as long as we are whishing, how about getting wing windows back?

My '95 F150 did not have it on the floor. I think it's safe to assume that Ford stopped the floor dimmer with that body style. My '04 certainly does not.

I also like the little blue 'bowtie' that lights up when you turn the brights on in a 69 :)
LOL, me too.. When I got my car that bulb was burned out, I restored the dash & inst cluster and the first time I hit the high beams, my smile lighted up as much as the lights.. :D

Most of that generation of Buick had floor(gas pedal) starter switches, it was acutally on the carb linkage if my brain hasn't completely failed me.

Not that I remember, but my uncle had 54 red ragtop with white interior that I remember from when I was a kid. What was special about the Buick? Most of mine were old chevy trucks...

When I bought my 64 in mid 90's I sold my 41 daily driver, it had the floor start too with the original crank in the trunk for when the battery was low. I tired starting it once with the crank, almost broke my hand. It had belonged to a miner that would leave it parked for long periods of time and had to use the crank to get it going. Also came with two boxes of spare parts incase something broke in the boonies.

I think my grandmothers jeep wagon I learned to drive in was floor button too.
