High amp alternator hook-up...

Hi gang,
I searched the forum, but didn't find what I needed. I have a 1970 Monte Carlo and am installing a 130 amp Powermaster alternator. I am using a 5 gauge feed wire for my 12 volts. Can I hook this directly to the battery through a fuse? I see all of the diagrams showing the feed wire going to the horn relay. Is this necessary?

Wire it to the horn relay and wire all high amp accessories off the horn relay. The horn relay is the mid point between the dash area and the battery. When the car is running, the alternator (not the battery) powers all accessories and charges the battery.
