That set-up in that link is not a HID lamp conversion, no matter what the link says. A conversion using a new bulb is not a real HID or Xenon conversion. HID lamps don't have a filament.
This is a true HID conversion system.

I also wouldn't use those bulbs in that link because their wattage is too high. That's off-road only territory. Look for a kit that uses 40 to 60 watt bulbs for a conversion. These are a better kit or maybe These

The part I didn't mention is that the wiring in the car will not support running 100W bulbs without using relays. I doubt you can even run 4 of the 50/65 watt bulbs without relays. Origionally, the bulbs were 50W for low beams (2 of them) and 37W for high beams (4 of them). The 50/65 watt bulbs are really for 2 headlight systems.

And you can't really argue that those conversion kits are really HID, which seems to be misused term when describing almost every automotive bulb available on e-bay.

So what is the difference? What exactly is "HID" defined as?

Does HID simply mean it is brighter or that it more closely matches natural sunlight than traditional bulbs or halogens?

It hard to what is needed, since some of the systems have a bunch of electronics, some have a new headlight shell, and some have just a bulb. Also, some cost 500$ while others only cost 50$.

I have halogens now, but wouldn't mind upgrading later.

True HID (High Intensity Discharge) lighting requires a ballast and of course special bulbs.
Some types of HID lighting include: Mercury Vapor, Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium lamps. The ones used in cars look like metal halide or mercury vapor, but i'm not sure, they appear to be in the same spectrum as those varietys.
