i just installed a new battery on my chevelle. the other one kept going dead and this new one is doing the same thing. i dont drive the car, i just start it up once in a while because i am restoring it. i have an external regulator. and i unplugged it with the battery full and then a day later plugged it back in and the battery was dead. what could be the problem?

Probably a bad diode in the alternator. You can get it checked free at the "Zone".

had the same problem. The brown wire from the ignition switch was hot all the time. This wire lets "turns" the regulator on. Lets it know the car is running and should only have power with the key on. Ran new wire from switch and problem solved.
