I have a 1971 Chevelle and it was an automatic on the column I believe at one point and when I bought it, it had a 4 speed but was all cut to hell. I replaced the hump and put the 4 speed hump for a console in it just how everyone says to plop it down and it only really lines up and falls into place in one spot. Now when I look at my borge warner trans the shifter lever seems offset to the left and when I took a few measurements from the frame because the body is off the car it seems as if the shifter isn't even going to be close to fitting within the hump. It looks off a good inch or two. Has anyone else had a problem like this? If so what should I do I would hate to cut it out. Is this something I am overlooking and it will line up when I put the body on? If anyone has any input that would be great and appreciated. Thanks

Uh, I think I'd go back to everyone who said "just flop it down" and whack them on th epee-pee with this cool new invention called the Tape-Measure!
Then whack yourself a couple times too...

I would wait to have the body, driveline and frame back together and then install the hump where it fits perfectly for your parts combo. No guess work or estimating that way. FWIW

which shifter is on the trans? there are different shifter mounts and bodies for different applications.. the different mount/shifter body combinations can move the location of the stick a couple of inches in any direction...
this is assuming that you've got a Hurst Competition Plus shifter, which is the most common one and the one with the most oem style mountings... if you've got a Hurst Super Shifter, it isn't going to line up with any factory hole on any car ever built...

if in doubt, post up some pics of the trans with the shifter on it, along with any numbers you find stamped in the shifter body and mounting bracket..

First question is are you going to use a console. If so you must use that floor hump. You might have to change the shifter to conform to the space available. The hump you installed cannot be off that far from side to side which is what I perceive you are worried about.

Mine didn't fit very well either. Muncie 4spd, console, Hurst Comp. I had to slot a notch on the right side for the handle to make it all the way to reverse. I had to compromise the positioning quite a bit to get the console to fit ... and, I'm still worried how it will go with carpet. And, I had to ding the inside quite a bit to get the shifter to fit from underneath.

The original holes in the floor for the 4 speed in 1970, Were cut with a fixture that was set on the floor, Then the hole was cut out with a Blue Wrench.
I have a piece of floor from a 70 bench 4 speed car. Lay the org. piece of floor in the floor grooves and the hole winds up in the perfect position.
I guessed a time or two cutting a hole in the floor of a 70, To weld in a bench seat 4 speed hump. Guessing DID NOT work for me.

I (very) recently dealt with this same issue. If the shifter hump is located correctly on the transmission tunnel then your issue is your shift assembly.

I had a Hurst Indy shifter and it was a good 3-4" to the left of where I needed it to be. Long story short, the Indy shifter will not work, period. I looked at the Hurst website and they have a Competition Plus shift assembly for pretty much every classic Chevy and transmission combo.

I would recommend calling Hurst tech support. They (along with guys like Alan F) were very helpful and knowledgeable and they can usually give you the correct product number for both the shifter assembly and linkage based on your car/transmission combination. If you get the correct shift assembly for the car/trans you should have it in the correct location.

Good luck!

When I changed from T400 to M22W on my 71, I had to cut the hole for the shifter. With the M22 in and lower part of shifter (hurst comp +) bolted on with M22 not connected to the tranny mount I jacked the rear of the trans up close to the tunnel so I can see where to mark the area for cutting hole. I cut hole so now the lower part of shifter will fit thru. Now with trans connected to the tranny mount and lever installed on the shifter I lined up the hump and screwed in place. Than installed console for a excellent fit. It worked for me..
Doing it with body off has got to be a guess I would think.

Lucas,
I will try to take some measurements on my 71 this weekend. It is an original stick car. I have the carpet out and I will see if I can find some reference points to measure from so that you can try to duplicate the location. I do not know for certain if the cutout is the same with and without a console ? My car is a bench seat car without a console.

Like the others said, you have to make sure you have the correct shifter and mount for a 71 or it might not fit even if you do get the hole in the right place.
