Hello everyone, i dont have a chevelle but get on here from time to time for the very usefull info on big blocks as it seems everyone on here knows what they are talking about. My question is if anyone knows of a machine shop in the dallas/fort worth area that will re work a set of 781 heads for a good price. My goal is a 500hp 454, i dont know to much about what would have to be done to the heads to get them to flow enough for 500hp so need a good machine shop that will honestly know what they are doing. Also once i get the heads re done what cam, intake and carb would everyone recommend. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Jerry,

Take a look at this thread. While it does not provide the name of a shop, it does show that good flow can be had from 781s. My mildly modified 781s made 492 hp with just larger valves and port matching. Still finishing the break in on the last rebuild with the full port job to see what I have now.

Thanks,
E

A great, streetable combo that should run low 12's/high 11's, and be a shear pleasure to drive. Will idle at 850 for manual trans, ~900-950 for an auto. 11.5-12" of vac at 850 rpms. Should be right at 500HP

-454, oval or rectangulars (ovals obviously perferred), just stock rebuild, bigger valves optional.
-9.5-10:1
-RPM intake
-750/850 carb
-1.75 headers
-Lunati Voodoo HR, 231/239 .600 110lsa

Sweet, sweet combo. I actually miss it!

Shoot for around 10:1 Static with a 25.7 cc Dome in the 118cc 781's. That way you can run a verily stout Cam HFT, SFT or Baby SR. Remember to use a .019" steel shim Gasket to keep the Quench at approx .044".

The Speed Pro L2465F30 25.70cc Dome will give you 10.25 Static while the ZL2349F30 29.40 Dome mabe a little too much for Pump Octane using the 781 but a very nice if you intend to push the limit on the street ;o)

My 10.25 (L2465F30) 460MK IV is a 600Hp SR with a Baby SR CB 288AR-10 (considering the 502A1LUN) CCA-933-16 Spring (200/500 @ 1.88") Idling at 800rpm but will hit 7000rpm with over sized Manley Valves with some basic Bowl cleaning with 781's.

Check out Comp Cams Extreme Marine HFT Cams like the XM278-12, CCA-924-16 Springs for Best BANG for the Dollar and will hit 6,200 rpm comfortably with loads of torque. Run a Holley 750 or 850Dp on an Edelbrock RPM with full tube headers and your looking at 500Hp. Beef up the Valve train with 7/16" Push rods, 7/16" ARP Studs and Pro MAG Roller Rockers = GONE in 60 Seconds ;o)

A Girdle really isn't necessary unless your into a SFT or SR with over .600 lift.

Obviously run a M20 to 3.08's or 331's, 355's at the lowest you want a Car not a TOY
