Re: help me!!!!!!!!! toyota

ok, first see if you're getting fuel to the fuel rail (open the gas cap and put your ear close and get someone to turn the key on) if you dont hear the fuel pump come on you probably have burned up a fusable link or your main relay or fuse is bad. if the pump comes on, check to make sure your timing belt isnt broke first, and then check your crank sensor (distributor is the crank sensor if it has one or its right behind the balancer with a plug going into it if it does not have a distributor), that will probably be bad if the pump comes on. hopefully that made sense, im a mechanic for a living and im kind of bad at explaining things. pm me if you have any more questions and you want my opinion.

Re: help me please!!!!!!!

94-95 Toy 2.2 was a transition year for code readers. Get yourself a INNOVA # 3173 (old style). I used that one on a 2.2, 94 camry. You'll have to count the flashes on the dash to figure out what is causing the problem. All them parts are big $$$. So it's worth the cost of the tool.

If the engine is like my 2400 cc 22RE in my old Tacoma truck it has a chain instead of a belt driven cam like most other Japanese four cylinder engines. A blown fuse might be a likely source for multiple symptoms though.

Re: help me please!!!!!!!

My '90 & '91 have a diagnostic box under the hood. You have to jumper a couple terminals (can't remember which one's), and it should flash any engine codes.

I've never had a problem, but the Igniter is evidently a common failure. Wouldn't have anything to do with no fuel though.

By the way, how did you determine no fuel/spark? I usually check for spark with the plugs removed ... but have yet to come up with a good fuel check on EFI engines.

Timing belts are a possibility ... although, typically not going to let go sitting in the driveway. You should be able to take the two upper cover bolts off, and see if the belt is going round/round. Toyota 2.2L is a clearance engine, so no engine damage if one does let go.

Anyhow, post some more of you diagnostic ... and maybe there's something that stands out. But typically no fuel and no spark all of a sudden doesn't happen very often.

Thanks, Neal

i believe the ignition module inside the distributor is prone to failure on those. may even have oil inside the distrib. which probably caused it. its been a while, i don't remember if u can get the module or if u have to buy the whole distrib. don't know if thats it or not, but it would explain no spark and no fuel.

what is with all the screwed up toyotas all of a sudden. We all know from several posts on here that they are the most reliable car ever built and never ever have problems. they last for 4 million miles, they have crumple zones that allow them to take a head on with a tractor trailer, they get 80 MPG and they can out run a F1 car if you install the optional fart can muffler. You guys must be mistaking your American manufacturer cars for those great Japanese cars. Are you sure you didn't mean cobalt? :D

I first thought it may be the timing belt but that wouldnt cause a loss of fuel pressure but could cause loss of spark since the rotor cant spin. I would also check the fuses. The timing cover isnt very difficult to remove, should be a top half that comes off so you can visually look at it.

I noticed that too actually.

Not for sure on this one ... the ignition module I'm thinking of is on the firewall, and says Ignitor (or something on it). REAL easy to see! I just replaced my cap/rotor last week ... and the only thing I saw inside the distributor was an electronic pickup.

I don't believe an ignition module would cause any loss of fuel?

I believe the timing belt would cause the injectors to quit firing, but no loss of fuel pressure.

Fuses and relays would be a real good possibility ... but I'm not for sure of any that control both fuel and spark.

Again, can you explain a little more what symptom are?

Well thanks for the info guys but the computer was bad. It had a burn spot the size of a pin top. We replaced it last night. That may have been a problem for quite some time because the car ran like crap for the pass few weeks, then it died but we brought it back.
$85 trip to Pick a part & were back to working on fun cars again
