I bought a truck from my neighbor. He says it has a 427 in it. I looked at the engine stamp on the passenger side of the block and it doesn’t have anything there. Perhaps it’s been zero decked? I haven’t look in the back yet by the transmission bellhousing because it’s hard to get to.

I did notice this on the passenger side door jam. He bought it back in 82 and it has always had this motor in it. Says it’s 12:1 compression and has a solid roller cam. It doesn’t run, so I can’t prove that yet.

Tall deck blocks are .4" taller than a car block. They have 4 ring pistons and longer pushrods. Intakes are also wider. Usually harder to fit under car hoods and steering shaft issues. But in resent years many more performance parts have become available.
That’s interesting I never knew that.

The deck in this one has been shaved, not sure by how much. It has a Winters intake manifold on it. Kinda cool.

As Gene said, you can easily tell if it's a short or tall deck by looking at the distance from the top water pump holes to the block deck. Some of the factory 427 industrial engines I've seen actually have a double thermostat housing which could be a dead giveaway.

And those 4-ring pistons are BRICKS!!! When you consider that Chevy never built tall deck 454's, only 427's, that piston is .400 taller than passenger type pistons, just for this application.

Playing engine detective today. I found notes from 92 that whoever did an installation of the motor was guessing the CID and year of the motor, so who knows what it really is. I’m going to look at the casting in the back when it’s not raining and pull a valve cover to see what kind of heads it has.

I can probably tell by looking at the wp like you guys said to rule out a 427 tall deck.

Looks like a painted GM Winters alu intake and a holley 1850 600cfm carb and a gm hei. Probably some old school valve covers maybe cal custom.

Look or feel the inside of the dampers inside to see if it is external balanced if its a 454.
Reach around, with your finger tips, to the inside of the damper . If it is there, you can feel the counterweight by the difference in the diameter of the ID of an external balanced damper. 454 also used 8” of diameter on the damper 427 was usually 7”.

Another picture. I’m not quite ready to get all dirty until after work to look at the bh casting #s, but I pulled off the valve cover to see what heads are on it. From the casting, it appears to be a 375 HP 396 head from the years 67-69

Could it be a L-78?

The snowflake manifold is dirty. Hasn’t been painted.

Annoyingly someone ground off the casting numbers in the back too. I was planning on pulling the motor anyways. Well, I guess the only way to tell is by looking at the crank and cam?
