put in new headlights and they burnout within 10 min. voltage regulator bad?, grounded wire? looking for help as to where to start.

Measure the output of the alternator to ground. It's the large red wire on the back of the alternator. It should be around 14.5 volts. Guessing it's a lot higher than that. Without more information guessing that the voltage regulator isn't working.
