Update: On friday i received the heater box in the mail. It is an original gm part. That night after assessing the condition of it, it was quickly torn apart and partially cleaned. Saturday the heater box itself was refurbished. Today i will be cleaning the guts of it : frame, heater core section, and flaps. I'll keep everybody updated with the progress.

Update today I reassembled the heater box. Now is the moment of truth, will it fit on the firewall. Took the heater box down to the garage and test fit it to the car. It fit perfect. I was so happy. When i put the dash in with all the ducts everything lined up great. I'll have pics on my website page 12.:disco:
Later. Ron.

What did you do about the two 4" holes that non A/C cars have through the firewall and factory A/C cars do not have?
Removing them off the cowl and welding patches in place.

OK I don't want to hijack, but I have been considering doing this very same thing on my 72 convertible.my question is do the 2 4" holes have to be sealed. If so can it be done from the inside or some other way I don't want to cut the cowl apart.

Yes. You can wire the vents shut. I just wanted it to look like it came that way from the factory.
