Has anyone here bought any icon tools from harbor freight?

How do they perform vs. brands like snap on, matco?

They look good to me, look like they would stand up to the same abuse but I'm curious if anyone here has any experiences?

About a year ago they had a recall on jack stands. When they came out with a replacement those failed too and as far as I know they don't sell them anymore.

Yes, I remember that...but they came out with a new tool line that's supposed to compete with the tool trucks...
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Icon brand.

Not with that brand, but I bought one of their large tool chests (U.S. GENERAL) back in '19. For the money, nothing else can beat it until you get into the multi-thousand-dollar big names.

As far as hand tools, I've been buying SK Tools most recently. They're still made in the US and aren't that expensive.

Harbor freight isn't a bargain like it used to be. They undercut everyone else with cheap low priced tools, and now they have a "better" and "best" line that are supposed to compete with the leaders, but at almost the same price, and still with lesser quality. I don't buy the cutting out the middle man stuff. They get theirs. I'll stick with Milwaukee and the likes. At least they don't change battery platforms every month. They have a line of hand tools now too. I guess they decided to play the same game the other way. I haven't tried them, but I bet they are pretty close to HF's top line stuff.

After the HF Hammer Drill that caught fire in my hand at about five minutes use, and the new "Upgraded" reciprocating saw that stripped the drive in less than an hour of overall use, I will never buy another HF electric tool no matter what claims they make.

Lots of DeWalt sold locally, still not the best available but last more than a day and none of it has caught fire yet.

I did see the icon line of tool boxes there. Not as cheap as the US General line. Nice box but for a home garage the US General is fine. I have been in the automotive repair fieled since 1980 and have always used Snap On tool chest. Yes.. Lots of money. 40 years and I’m still buying tools from Snap on and Matco. Mac Tools can’t keep a dealer for some reason here. They all go out of business in a couple of years.

I'm contemplating getting an ICON socket set just to fill a hole in my box.

This:

vs. this:

I know its only a $469.01 (insert sarcasm) difference, but for home I think I'll go ICON.

That said, if I was still swinging wrenches for a living, I'd pony up for the Snap-On.

I try to buy ONE Snap-On single item of something I need in my box that I don't have every time I go to Carlisle.

EDIT: I actually just found out about Tekton. I think I'll buy from them before HF.

Put approx $4500 in Matco toolboxes (upper/lower) slides on draws are going away, Matco guy says can't help unless used as trade in, Matco/SnapOn tools coming in from China, dealer removes labels, sell at 40 + % mark-up. Ask me why my next new toolbox will be HF. Usually decent used USA tool buys at swap meets, you just have to open your eyes and be on your toes. Junk screwdrivers with good handles can be used for file handles by using controlled heat to remove the screwdriver and insert the file. When was the last time you bought a GOOD file handle for a reasonable price ???? Etc.

The last socket I had that split was an old US made Craftsman socket..... But it was replaced free of charge.

I have a smattering of mid-grade (not Icon) HF hand tools. Wrenches and sockets mostly. The only real issue I've had is with their wobble extentions where the end that fits into the socket breaks off after a few years of hard use. Always replaced for free and given the design, it really isn't a surprise when and where they break, but they sure are useful.

Their hex driver bits have worked well but tend to be slightly softer than I think they should be and thus get loose after a number of years of good use. I am absolutely pleased as punch with their ratcheting end wrenches, been using those for years and they work very well, fit the fasteners very snug and the ratchet action needs just a few degrees to click to the next step.

For those rarely used but necessary tools I typically just watch ebay, some really good bargains there. I got a set of Craftsman flare nut wrenches, both SAE and Metric in the same bundle, for like $20 brand new. They are as good as the SK set of SAEs I have up at the shop and obviously cover more of my cars. Most of my mainstay hand tools are Craftsman, the older good stuff.

I had a Pittsburg 9/16ths open end jaw come flying past my face without much pressure so they're JUNK, ICON looks like pretty decent tools IMO, I've been eyeing the Icon torque wrenches but finished everything on my car that needs torqued

The HF tools are definitely getting better IMO. I have several broken snap-on and Husky sockets here so…

I borrowed my neighbors HF cordless leaf blower and it worked great so I decided that I needed one of my own.

But, to remain standard with batteries and chargers I bought a DeWalt cordless blower and it isn't near as powerful as my neighbors HF blower.
