Why do I feel like Bill Murray. Not gopers but groundhogs.

719806

I now have 2 that are living under my storage shed. Everytime I have a chance to get a shot at them something happens with my backdrop or they move. They share the yard with my inside kept dogs and free range chickens so a trap will get me birds or the dogs. My garden is close by and they have definitely done damage to it. I want to plant my winter garden when the weather cools but not with them around.

NC allows for trapping but not relocation so if trapped they will die from lead poisoning, Since is no closed season on private lands.

I now understand the obsession Bill Murray had in Caddyshack.

Yeah, we have one that lives under one of our sheds too. We've actually had them there for 10+ years now.

Every now and then, one will emerge in the spring, then disappear for a bit, then suddenly we have a big one and 3-4 little ones wandering around the yard. They like to eat the weeds in our lawn, so I'm good with that. A few months later in the year, there is only one left, as the rest have been run off by the winner (or flattened by the nearby cars.) I'm thinking it's a female that usually wins, since we wind up with the little ones almost every spring (I think one or two years we didn't.)

They got into the garden once, but since it is fenced off, we watched with a trail cam and it was the little ones going through the fencing. We fixed that problem with some smaller fencing.

Other than the flowers my wife planted right next to the shed (what were we thinking - that was like putting out a buffet for them) they have been pretty harmless...

This should do the trick.....

That seems a little extreme......and winds up damaging the topsoil any way.
That's a lot of effort to outsmart a rodent.
I have minor plant/garden damage from chipmunks.....and occasional major damage from deer.

Nah, it fixes an age old problem. I've shot them, blown them up with m80's, flooded them out, poisoned them, smoked them out, and this is the most humane way.

Doesn't damage the topsoil, just "moves" it. If you've ever had a rodent problem that's severe, you'd understand.

Reminds me of the time we had a hard time trapping the beavers at our conservation club. we got some by emptying a 20 round clip, very strategically into their nests. GOT EM! 5 .56 mm holes dont mess up the lawn! PS it was easy to see their nests so it wasnt 100% blind. but not 100% effective, they came back.

Between last year and this year, I’ve shot 10 of them. Less than a week later, another one shows up. I wouldn’t care but they dig under my pole barn and I don’t particularly care for that so...buh bye.

Out at my place the problem is moles. Smaller but just as destructive. I use a tube or tunnel trap for those little a-holes. Dig down until you find a tunnel, place open end of trap towards hole then cover with dirt and a piece of plywood to block all light. If you want to expedite the execution pour about 20 gallons of water done the hole before you cover it and you will have the rodent trapped as soon as it thinks it's home is being flooded. Have trapped dozens if not hundreds of the pests like that. Same method should work on groundhogs just find a larger tube trap. Trap is buried so nothing gets into it except your intended victim.

The stupid rodents have their den under my building, who knows what kind of hole they have dug.

Gummy bears work well too. They eat the gummy bears, can't digest them, and die. I've had 100's of moles (or seems like it) in my yard and it works flawless every time.

Poke a little hole, drop the gummy down (with gloves on so they can't smell your scent), and walk away.

back in the 80's on my buddys farm he had a major gopher problem the yard in front of the shop was about 100x200 it was planted in corn for a few years then they quit and just seeded it with grass so i suppose they liked it as it had been turned over, anyway we tried gopher gassers on each end of the yard and nothing,so i took one of the exhaust hoses from my dads shop that we ran thru the doors in winter so we could run the cars.threw a couple gassers down a hole stuck the hose in it hooked it to my 66 tempest and cranked it up on a high idle.grabbed some beers and sat back.within a couple minutes there was smoke coming out from all over that yard there was about 50 smoke trails it was pretty funny at the time.did do the trick too.

I mowed all of the grass under my trailers and field, dug out some around the building and my dog is spending his day running around looking for the critters. Trying to make it uncomfortable for them.

I must try that!
This year I have small moles. For years they were always voles. The voles would fall into my in ground pool and that was my trap. This year the pool wasn't catching them so I set some mouse traps in the holes with peanut butter, plywood on top. The bastards would cover them up like a cat in a litter box! I finally caught one in the trap to confirm it was a mole. Time for gummies.

gummys - great idea! i cant pass 'em either.
My brother loves gummy bears too, but once his wife bought him gummy bears and something in them got him pretty sick.

He said it was like he had the "mix" before getting a colonoscopy.

He said next time he goes for a colonoscopy, he'll eat the gummy bears instead of drinking the "colon blow" liquid.
