AS you might have read my topics during the last 2 weeks, have been debating about 502 or Merlin 509. I was steered away from the 509 due to the huge solid lifter cam 256/266 and .580/.600 lift which did not match well with the 9 : 1 compression of the engine and it would cause certain issues with idle and vacum.

Here is the GREAT news. Just talked to World products, the have made the 509 with a hydraulic flat tapped cam of 255 degrees duration at .50and .557 lift. Also the compression is at 9.5 : 1!!

Basically what the input was from you guys re why not go with the 509, it has been fixed by World for the same price!

This does it for me, I am ordering one of these guys today.

Looking forward to this, I will let you know how it goes from here.

Very cool! I dont know about 502s, but my bud runs a home built 509, Dart 1's, tripower, solid roller, and it was like the ol 427 on the bottle. Wild. Actually pulls a decent mpg off the trips when he stays out of it ( maybe 12-14 mpg) and cut a 6.75 1/8 time first time out on my BFG drags.

Kripes, how can you go wrong with that!

Sound like a kick a$$ engine. You still might have vacuum issues with a duration of 255 at .050. Goodluck, Tony

The tech suggested to run a vacum reserve canister, and I think this should solve any vacum problems.

Well I ordered my 502 today. 230/236 I/E at .05 and aluminum heads so you went extreme
compared to me! I thought you were going to be the conservative one.

When we get our cars done we will need to go up to SIR and see who's idea of the best
street motor was the best. I am counting on my sightly less motor to give me a better hook than you!

Are you going through Sallee to get it? Maybe we can ride down in one truck when they are done!

You go it Mike.

I am calling Tom tomorrow at Sallee to see what he can find out for me.

Unfortunatelly the new Merlin has only been made for the last 6-8 weeks and everything that Sallee has in stock is with the biger cam.

World told me that the dealer can order the motor from World's warehouse in NY where is in stock to be dropshipped to my place.
I will find out more tomorrow from Sallee and let you know.

I am way out from getting my car done. The 9" should be here any day now and I have the adjustable Hotchkis package waiting in my garage. I need to get a tranny, radiator, headers, exhaust, fuel cell to finish up the car. Next big decision, 200R4 or Tremek 5 speed (hopefully will not take me as long to make this decision as it did for the motor.) The way I am going I should be done with the car by 2008!!

Talk to you soon.

Me too!!

The 3.20 something first gear ratio of the Tremek and 3.89 rear end ration kind of scares me a bit. 2.74 I believe is the 1st gear ration of the 200R4.

I have the 509 World Class motor with aluminum heads in my 68 Chevelle SS and we found out that we needed to run a vacuum canister / reservior to assist at low idle / city driving. The Merlin 509 also has an AED 1050 carb which has been continuosly fouling the plugs - I may elect to pull it out and replace it with an Edelbroch electric choke carb.
