Got my 225 springs from santhuffs in my car. Car sits low now with plenty of suspension travel. What are suggestions on shocks. This is a street car still and I'm afraid it will bottom out easy with these springs. Probably gonna need a stiff compression shock. What are some suggestions? Cant afford those high dollar QA1's...

Leverage ratio...what travel you have at the shock is shorter than what you have at the wheel.

Depending on the car, it can be close to 2 to 1 ratio. If you have 3" at the shock, you would have close to 6" at the wheel...this is over the full travel, not from ride height.

My '79 Malibu is right at 2 to 1 ratio, so the Chevelle should be close to that.

If you can't afford the Qa1's, then I guess the Afco BNC's I would suggest are out too. lol
Yeah, that's exactly what i was thinking too. And from what I hear, for the price, the AFCO BNC's are a much nicer shock than the QA-1's are. I believe that the BNC's are also listed as having 4" of travel vs. the 3" of the QA-1's. The only drawback with the BNC's are that they have such a huge diameter (it's 2.4") so the lower control arms really need to be hogged-out quite a bit. But the BNC's come with a custom weld-in ring specifically for doing just that.

How would you suggest I properly measure for ext and comp. lengths?

Measure a stock shock for the car would be the best way. No reason to make this harder than it needs to be.

Or take the shocks & springs out and measure between the mounting points with the suspension at full droop and full compression.

Why not just order the correct part number the manufacturer provides for your car?

Don't waste your money on the QA-1 shocks...simply not enough range of adjustment on those things.
I tried...:(
I had great success with the Alston DA.

My list of shocks from best to ...

1. Santhuff
2. Afco double
3. Strange double
4. everything else

At our shop, the Santhuff's are used on the Outlaw 10.5 and max effort D/R stuff, and we use Afco & Strange on most everything else.

Afco's street/strip shocks p/n 1022 are listed for my car. The extended length is 13 3/8" and compressed is 9 3/8". The stock shock is almost 16" and that is what I measure with the suspension at full droop as well.

Well, the landing was my fault due to the oh S$$T!
Point is, shocks that control what you have are fine, springs that store energy, and sufficient travel.
I just get tired of Santhuff stuff when the Morosos work just dandy and don't desreve the bad rep.
The headers were easily repaired. I had good suspension stops in the car, even though they got hurt as well. All beter now, and if I get back to it, I'll go better than 9.20 this year.

My Suspension of choice right here. CHEAP JUNK.:D Keeps the headers off the ground though.
