You have to remember the new cars are built with colapst bends to give way to protect the occupant. The new noses and backends amaze me they just do not fall off but they do what they are designed to. The older heavier metal helped a lot in the old days with low speed impact but a serious impact sent the motor or steering wheel into your lap where today cars will drop in onto the street underneath your feet. Government Safety regulations.

Still nice to see the old iron prevail once in a while

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!! What is it with Jap pickups and 70 Chevelles????????
A few years ago, a person whose ancestors came from south of the Texas border, in a Toyota pickup, rearended me while I was stopped at a red light, 1mi from the house!!!!!
Bent the rear bumper, torqued the trunk and buckled the left rear quarter. He had insurance-------------------BUT HE TOLD THE POLICEMAN THAT I BACKED INTO HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since the policeman did not observe the incident, the driver did not get a ticket. But, I took pictures, gave them to his insurance company and told them my side. The insurance paid (barely) for the damage, but would not pay to paint the whole car (paint NEVER matches perfectly). So, I paid out of my pocket to have ALL the trim removed and the whole car painted!!!

It's hard saying, I saw it coming so I was ready. At least it was a company vehicle so this insurance is better then the random guys. Of course the kid had almost no teeth from either current or former use of meth. He said the floor mat bunched up under the brake and he couldn't stop.

I bet you have more damage than you think. Try to buy a new bumper and make it line up right. I bet your trunk floor is bent.
I agree, looks like even a little bit of the rear glass trim popped up so there is a tweak somewhere. I'll bring it to the guy who painted it in 2003 and have him get it right. This guy has a shop full of Camaros and chevelles so it will be in good hands.

Not a great day but you can see what old metal vs new metal is like.
 A collision with the 'Bu is my second worst nightmare (being forced back into the work force is number one). Sadly, in my state his insurance company is able to refuse to pay the true value of your damage, citing "it's a 50 year old auto." I hope you have a good collector car insurance company who will fight for you. Keep us posted if this becomes a worse ordeal.

Company truck they should be carrying some high insurance. I know I have to. Floor mat bunched up what a crock. Kid was definitely looking at his phone. If the insurance don’t pay, I’d bet your back is really sore you might want to go to the clinic to get that check now though.

My uncle got rear ended in his 68 Nova SS in the 70's the complete trunk area was crunched to the back glass, he pulled the built 350 & Muncie out and dropped them in a 57 2 door Chevy about a year later same thing happened, both those cars sat behind my Gparents house for 30+ yrs, there's really not much frame at the back of these old cars, newer cars are designed with crumple zones and have lots of metal meat where it counts, newer metal bumpers are made from re-re-cycled tin though

Just reading the subject title makes you cringe. Your lucky that's all that happened. When I had my 69 Chevelle I got rear ended at a low speed and because the bumper is bolted to the body and not the frame both quarters buckled above the wheel well. On my 71 the bumper is bolted to the body also.
