My uncle gave me a new GMPP 454 block (Gen V1). It was one he bought from Summit and then found another block he decided to use for a build so he gave it to me!!! Is this even a good block to start with or should I look for another?

I am going to do my FIRST (God help me!!!) build as I thought it would be fun and educational at the same time. I already have a GMPP 454HO in my 71 Chevelle but would like to build one with a little more HP and these GMPP crates seem to burn oil due to the rings they use (mine burn just a little but a little is still too much!). I assume these are the same blocks in these engines.

So, for those who have been down this road, give me a recipe for a kick-ass 500hp+ streetable setup that can easily hit low 12's or even a high 11 if I'm lucky (heads, pistons, crank, cam, valves, etc.....). Kinda of a buyers list if you have one (summit and jegs are where i get most of my parts but i can buy elsewhere)

I have a local engine/race machine shop that can do and machine/porting work i need done. Also, even though this is a new block, what machine work would you have done prior to starting on this project as the complete crate engines cylinders walls are sometimes questionable.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

aftermarket heads with correct gen 6 head gaskets

gen6 cam

just google BBC GEN VI and do some homeowrk, you have a really good block, alot of old school guys dont like using the new stuff becasue you need a few specific parts other than that the newer blocks have been improved upon the older mark 4 blocks but either way all the 427 454 blocks are very good foundations for a daily cruier to all out drag cars

getting a car in the low 12`s with a 454 isnt hard and can be completely streetable and daily driven, talk to some guys on here about some sild combos everyone here has been a tremendous help to me and Im sure they will help you out

but again google is a very good friend of mine...good luck with it :)

Thanks for the info. Did the google and got some good info!!!

I was wondering if anyone here has a build based on this Gen VI block? I seems most a built on the older generation blocks and I was curious if this was due to the the older ones being easily obtainable or the newer blocks being questionable in some way.

Since my 454HO has a slight oil burning issue, I though about tearing it down and honing the cylinders (i read here where that is the issue), and replacing the pistons with ones that do not use low tension rings( another issue). Then adding a more aggressive cam and better heads to get better power. Then when I was given this block, I figured build it up and try and sell the 454HO as it only has about 3K on it.

Any suggestions on heads, cams, valves, pistons, etc... for the Gen VI block?

Gen 6 blocks will take any aftermarket head so you are in good shape. To make 500HP and since you have to buy a crank I would consider building a 489 CID engine. You can go mild build on these and make that kind of power fairly easy along with some some tire torchering torque.
