Looking at one of these 427 BBC from the General for a 68 Chevelle street car. Has anyone had any experience with them? This car will not be raced at all. Thanks for any input and Merry Christmas to everyone.

Are you looking specifically for a 427? I ask because there are BBC builders here on the site with more HP/TQ for less money and better parts.

My 78 year old father is the second owner of this 68 Chevelle (original SS 396 ) and has been a mechanic his entire life he has been a teacher for the last 20 years. He rebuilt the 396 and put edelbrock heads on it but wants to put all the original parts back on it and put it on the stand. He wants a new engine and has always been a fan of the 427. Thanks guys for the interest. I know we have to change the oil pan to fit in the chassis.

 I can't recommended a GMPP/CPP crate engine. The 454 HO and ZZ454 has lots of QC issues, mostly due to upside down rings (not to mention union vs. management friction). The various 502's seem to have been somewhat better, I guess. The CPP 427 is way overpriced for what you get in return.

I'd find a local-to-you engine builder and have them build a mill for you.

Sir, I made as much power (more with single 4bbl, same with tripower) with my garage built 427, so I do not think the crate is any sort of "deal" in the least. Having said that, the best BBC builders are down here, so you have that border crossing issue. Yet we have moved engines and blocks to/fro before.

They are junk. As already said look into one of the builders on this sight. I have seen 4 of the crate 427's from GM and multiple other GM crate engines torn down with problems right from the start. Poor machining and cheap parts.

Congratulations to your dad for making it to 78. Not so easy any more. Try to find a reputable builder on your side of the fence and have the original rebuilt. Keep the quality of modern fuel in mind when doing so and if you have to run cornoline like we do the carb will need compatible "green" components.

I do not know this guy personally, but I've seen some of his work on here, and other forum's. That being said, i'd contact him regarding his ZL1, which i'm sure he could build to your specifications.

I do. and know his work intimately. You can't miss with a pro like Mark. And you dont need no "ZL1".

Which coast are you on? All I will say is that my CDN bud spent 10K CDN on a 454 out of Toronto, some " guru". Waste of money. A mill form Vortecpro at the time would have set him back 6k USD, which is Still less than 10K canadian. But he went with the local guy with a good "rep". If he had at least spoken to Mark.....or even spend the 10K on a GMPP crate maybe.....

I would not be waiting for the borders to open to go fix it - again. Its his son's car now. And the issue is this " Johnny Rocket" build. Its shit. I am tempted to yank the POS out and throw it through his door for the satisfaction. I built a better 427 in my garage for 1/3 the cost,a dn thats not saying much.

My 7K USD MJ467 is FLAWLESS! 600 ft lb worth of flawless is darn fun!~

Vortec Pro would be on the top of my list, being in Canada its a pain in the ass. Getting a virgin core is almost impossible. We don't want to rebuild the 396 , we did it a few years back and he just wants to put it on the stand and keep all the original numbers matching stuff sitting in the corner. ( he has every original part for this car) The thought behind the crate motor was everything new, delivered to our door and even a warranty. There are a few good machine shops around here but after a good core is found they wont be any cheaper and it takes forever to get it back from a good shop.

 Oh man, who'd a thunk Wonder Woman would like Chevelles? Wow, just wow.
Decided to have some fun when the Site changed over the Summer.
I think the new Wonder Woman movies kind of....stink.
But back in the 1970s, Lynda Carter was a very beautiful, very natural.....young woman.

Folks, if Oliver69 can get two of Mark's motors sent to Italy without issue, I'm sure they can be sent to Canada just as easily.
In all seriousness, why let what I'm assuming is a few to several hundred dollars of freight charges stop you?
There is at least one member here in Hawaii who ordered a crate motor from one of the respected builders that frequent this site.
My point is that it can be done and that the additional cost is minor compared to all the other $$$ we throw at our cars.

The only thing I might add is that I also LOVED my 427. Spun that bad boy to 7000K all the time. It made some serious "snot" up there, GM502 crate level snot. I would encourage you to consider that, and build the valvetrain accordingly.
