Replacing my power steering pump, how many bottles of fluid will I need pick up at the GM dealership to bleed the air out of the system? Anyone have the GM part #?

One would probably do it, but two is what I would get to be safe. Also to get most of the air out, fill the system and raise the front of the car so the front wheels ore off the ground and turn the steerig wheel form lock to lack about 20 times without the engine running.

The GM part number for power steering fluid is 89020661. The previous part number was 1050017. Both fluids work equally well.

The only P/S fluid my dealer carries is GM part 12345867 and is $18.64 qt.
Went to Napa and bought fluid for little more than $3 qt.

Is that the special, cold-weather PS fluid? I had to put that in my Trailblazer, the PS whines more than a two-year-old when it was cold out.

Yep, it's GM's cold climate fluid and that's the only kind they sell here.
Nuts? I thought so too.

You could use ATF in a pinch if you had no other choice, I've done it before.

Go back in time far enough, and ATF was the recommended fluid.

89020661 shows up on GMPartsDirect at $5.60 per unit. So it is a good number and is available through GM dealers. It is the current approved GM power steering fluid.

ATF works fine. BUT, keep in mind, it's not a really good thing to mix the fluids. Also, ATF wears out all the rubber parts at an accelerated rate. Seals, and hoses will start to leak quicker with ATF in the system.

...and for anybody that cares, NEVER use ATF in a Ford's P/S system. It'll work, but it'll whine like the above mentioned two year old.

Another thing, Mike was dead on about the priming of the pump. After you turn it lock to lock a few times, check the fluid level and add as needed. DO NOT start the car until all of the air is out of the system. P/S fluid has to sit a loooong time once it's airated for all the bubbles to work out.

That's kinda why I asked. When I got my car I added ATF because I didn't know any better and that's what it said to use on the cap on my P/S pump. Now it leaks like a sive and I'm replacing the hoses.

always have been curious why they used another fluid in PS systems , while ATF works very well .

I've read that "Corvette" article & understand now the "how-abouts"

By the way , I have a leak on my PS , should check it , I pour on the three weeks almost 1 inch of ATF to get the level at the top , might be the rubber parts :clonk:
