Hey all, I am about to get my engine running again but have changed heads and am not 100% sure what kind of timing to use. Tony at AFR suggested 36 or 37 degrees full advance for this combo which sounds right in line with what I expected but what should my INITIAL timing be? Right now I have the distributor set up for 18 degrees of advance and was planning on 18 initial so 36 fully advanced but I want to make sure I'm not over advancing at idle with this small of a cam. Specs are below.

Gen VI 454, stock
Cam is ZZ502 cam, 224/234 degrees @ 0.050" and .527"/.544" lift
MSD 6AL and Pro Billet distributor
AFR 265 heads
9.5:1 compression
Very mild dome pistons
BG Mighty Demon 750 DP
Edelbrock rpm air gap intake
3000 tight ATI converter
3.55 gears with 28" tires
Car is roughly 3900# '71 Monte Carlo

Forgot, car is a street car but isn't babied. Probably sees the track 2 times per year.

Thanks

Scott

Looks like you have it planned right on to me. Get your total at 36 and if your initial ends up 14-18 I would let it ride.Sometimes your stop bushings are not dead on.
Im sure you know to disconect your vac adv when you set it. Tuning the vac adv will be another deal if you are using it. Lots of good info if you look around here.

Cool. I just have to get a ground strap figured out--new heads don't have all of the same bolt holes, tighten a motor mount, replace the oil pressure gauge line I broke, make a couple plug wires and go. Hopefully tomorrow she will live again.

32,34,36* all ran pretty darn close for me at the track. 34* was actually the fastest, but only by a hair.

Yeah, I lost my bolt hole for my ground strap to the motor with the new heads. Have to find a new spot that isn't too much of an eye sore.
really? mine have a threaded hole at the low outside corner....

I have the Alan Grove alternator bracket and it goes to that hole Davey. I got it now though, I bolted it up to the good ole motor mount.

I am SOO close to starting this beyatch now, need to get gas and my battery is apparently shot....Grrrrr, stupid Optima Red Top! Not the first one of those I have lost. Tomorrow should be the day. :hurray:
