Generator light on dash

Turned the car off last evening and noticed the red generator light on the dash was on very faintly. I started the car back up and it went off immediately but came on again when I shut it down. It's a very faint light that you would miss in bright sunlight. I don't drive the car much at night so maybe it's been going on for a while now, I dunno. Unlike most of the people on here I'm fairly green when it comes to working on cars so I'm not exactly sure where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

clean the contacts of the blue and white wires going into the alternator. Also clean the contact of the red wire going to the alt.If that doesn't do it,check the voltage at the red alt. wire.Should be around 13.2 volts.Check all the contacts (4) going into the voltage regulator. If the alt. is putting out the volts, and all contacts are good, could have a faulting voltage regulator. The old style voltage reg. had movable contacts (relays) that can wear out over time.If you have narrowed down to the regulator, buy a Wells solid state unit fron autozone.
