They used about a zillion different cars. We met one of the cops at some clebrity show and he said the show hired people to search the country for cars as a full time job. Whatever options they had, so be it. Slap on the orange paint and roll cameras.
He also told us that after they wrecked one on the show, they would cut the frame so that no one would end up with one of these damaged cars...eliminated the liability issue.

That's what I was thinking. I saw one of the many original General Lees in Galtlinburg TN at Cooter's Garage this week and it had the trim. I saw Cletus there too, he was signing autographs. By the way nice project BlueSS, have any more pics?

I just recently noticed that also. Just saw the "general Lee Birthday" episode where they flashed back to when they bought it. The guy at the junkyard said it was a 68 - Thought that was kind of funny. And boy, Cooter can sure paint in that garage. LOL

Yeah I saw that too.

I've always wondered why they didn't use one main car for the close up shots and use the other cars for stunts....as compared to using several cars for close up shots and then later jumping them.....

Just for some gee whiz info the first General Lee had chrome rocker moldings. No other General Lee's had chrome rockers after that.

Lee 1 also had the cross flags painted on the deck filler panel.
Tom, you beat me to it. Also, there are original General Lee cars still around. Contact Wayne Wootten (not sure of last name), president of the Dodge Charger Registry, as he got a sweet deal from Warner Bros and was able to buy as a lot, all of the remaining General Lees from the old set. He has pictures of about 5-8 car carriers filled with General Lees in various stages from complete cars to missing front clips to totally mangled cars. Way to tell if the car is a TRUE General Lee.... there is a tag next to the VIN tag that reads LEE 01 or whatever number that General Lee was. (ex. LEE 29).

I don't think all LEES carried the special ID tag next to the VIN. I know LEE 1 did and so did some of the earlier police cars as well as set props were ID'd this way. The LEE 1 tag was nothing more than a plastic stick on, label maker label. It was an inch long and simply said LEE 1. It was simply used to help catalog and keep track of show units during filming. Who would have ever thought it would be the Holy Grail of General items years down the road ?? Somehow, it just happened to survive on the dash all of those years. Wayne Wooten is a good contact for true General Lee verification though. My brother had several contacts with him during our ownership of LEE 1

There is one here in Green Bay with documentation, at a Museum. I will now have to go back and look to see if it has a tag.

Where is that Bill?

I can't say as though I have ever even seen a car in a museum in Green Bay, although I don't go to many at all.

Beware of the museum cars with documentation. Many Generals were used on the show circuit in the 80's, like the ISCA, Carl Casper type deals and are often claimed to be originals. ( These cars were used to promote the show, but never appeared on screen ) Typically a show/screen used General has massive jump / crash damage and is very crude in appearance. There are some nice examples out there, but the cool show used ones, look USED !! Show used General Lees are like LS6's. There are more now than were ever built !! :)

Another weird one is they deleted the side marker lights? maybe so the could use 68 fenders on the 69? since the markers were different for those years.
Not unusual at all. The show used many 68's. They filled the holes. The 68 had a unique, "pointed" dash and you can spot many 68's as you watch the show. The tail light panel from our LEE1 was robbed to create a 69 out of a 68 during first season filming.

Jeff,

It's at Doc's Harley Davison on hwy 29 going towards Shanawo, About 15 min out of GB. It is a must to see. He only has maybe a dozen cars but they are all worth seeing. He also has the 57 plymouth from the movie where it had a mind of it's own and it killed people (can't recall the name of the movie).
Best of all it's free and you can even pick up a new bike while you are there.

Tom, I will ask him the next time I am out there. It very well could be a promo car as it looks pretty nice. I am not into the general so I couldn't tell a 68 from a 9, or anything else about them.
