I searched through the threads on this and found some good information but most of the info for GV was on automatic transmissions. I would really like some input from someone who has a Muncie with the GV. Pictures would also be great. I called GV and asked if they had any pics of their buttons on the shifter, but they didn't.

From what I've read and heard from them they have a great product but I want it to be aesthetically pleasing. I'm picturing a shifter like in Eleanor but instead of"go baby go" for the nitrous, the switch activates the GV unit.

I have to second that, I believe the gear vendor is strictly made for automatics. It is on the top of my wishlist:thumbsup:
That is inncorrect ... they DO make one for 4 speed manual trannys (I believe it was original equipment on the Calloway Corvettes), they just don't have much in the way of photos/documentation on the install.

Robert,
It's not why!

It's why not! You can use your Muncie and have an overdrive. Basically every overdrive for gears one through three is the same ratio as the next higher gear. When I heard this I thought well that is stupid, what good is it then?

Then it was explained to me. You have your fourth overdrive basically a fifth gear for the highway (Like your 5-speed TKO). And. in my opinion, what makes this better than a TKO is those overdrives on gears 1-3 give you a clutchless shift. So on the strip you have 2 shifts and one clutchless wherever you want it. And you don't even let off the gas you just hit a button. Sounds good to me.

Somebody who KNOWS about the Gear Vendors unit correct me if I'm wrong!

Here is the info from GV.

Someone, right here on TC, put a GV behind the Muncie in a Chevelle that was getting a complete frame off. They posted pictures of the chassis with the engine/Muncie/ suspension and wheels. The GV added several inches to the overall length of the Muncie (seems like it was 8-10inches added length). I can't remember if that person mentioned if the floor pan had to be bumped a little for clearance (but I think it did).
Those pictures were posted by that person about 1-2yrs ago (I think).

I don't really see the point of a GV, so help me out. I guess if you want to keep the car original in terms of keeping the original trans. But, you still have ~40yr trans that can blow up.

But, I figure why not change the tranny out for something more modern, better shifting, and higher torque rating.

Not to mention a taller OD (ex., TKO6 w/.64 OD)

As I understand it, the exact same GV unit is used everywhere - it's just the adapter housing to mate it to each different tranny that's changed.

Justin had it right - it's not just an OD, it's a gear splitter.

I've got one behind my TH400 and love it.

Don't get me wrong it sounds like it will be a pretty cool set-up. It's just you could basically buy & install a TKO for the same investment & that would be a lot of shifting in the 1/4 mile. Post some pics when you get done. It will be a wild set-up I'm sure. :D

OR you could just wait for the Autogear 5 speed muncie.

I spoke to them 3 weeks ago and they said 3-6 months and it'll be available. I know they have been saying this for a while but that is what I was told.

Next year I am either going to go back to 4 speed, 5 speed muncie or GV on my TH400. decisions, decisions.......

How do high stall converters like OD trannys? I wonder....

I have the M21Y in my 66. Third is 1-1. Gear number four is now .82 overdrive. It is awesome for anyone that cruise any distance on the highway. I can run at 75mph at 2700 rpm's and still have all the power I need. The 3.73 rear still runs hard out of the whole. Any good Muncie repair shop can regear you for just a little more than a standard rebuild. The great thing is the shift pattern is the same and know one knows its different at the shows.
