I purchased a 454 engine which is supposed to have a .040 overbore. The engine is complete and only needs assembly. The owner gave me a new Fel-Pro gasket set for the engine. Can I use the gasket set he gave me or would I need a .040 overbore gasket set if there's such a thing.

Yes you can use it if it is the correct set for your engine
No there is no such thing as a .040 gasket unless it is copper or a custom like Cometic that can be ordered to your specs for a price,,
Most BB gaskets are 4.370 or so except for the big bore ones so they fit bores to .100 over with no issue.
