Pulled the cover off my smugglers box on the '68 El Camino.

I needed to confirm that it is rust free.
A real surprise after seeing the wheel arches.

Mostly wasted space, there is a small plastic box behind the drivers seat that uses some of it.

The new engine is a thirsty devil, and this is Nevada, where a short drive may be a couple of hundred miles.

So I'm pretty certain I will be putting a second fuel tank in the SB.
By my measurement it should be about thirty gallons.
The urge for a custom fuel-cell is strong, the dollars are weak. :(
So probably just a nice heavy baffled steel tank with sender.
I know a wizard fabricator/welder.

Have not decided where to put the filler.
I still remember the phony '74 "Oil Shortage", so might want a hidden filler.
Thought about removing the original fuel tank, but gas prices in some of our rural towns are crazy, so being able to start out on a trip with around fifty gallons wins.

There must be a direct fit larger tank that can be installed to replace the stock one. Maybe call the after market mfgrs to see if they know of one with the basic measurements - except for the depth.

I would consider sealing the cabin from the smugglers box area if you do put a tank in there. I might also open it up to the bottom or ventilate it so you don't have any explosive fumes build up in a confined space.

The floor should already be open unless someone else sealed them.Right from the factory the bolt holes for the rear seat belts are open,I think they were left open to act as a drain. There may also be other ways for air to get in or fumes to get out but I haven't looked in there in a while.I would strongly urge you to use a sealed tank with a rollover valve or a cell if you're gonna mount it in the smugglers hatch since it is basically an extension of the passenger compartment.
The other option if you can't afford a cell is sealing off the smugglers area so no fuel or fumes can get to you or yours.

Yes I will seal the small access hole behind the drivers seat.

It's an odd shape so a custom tank will be needed.

There are already several factory holes in the SB floor.

Will get to this once I finish installing my new hood.

I've been thinking of such a thing for my 64 for about the last 20 years.....see how far I've gotten. Haha...Anyway, while mine is a bit different I'd like to steal any good ideas you have so post pics when you're done!
