The needle on the gas gauge goes past full and off the scale into the temperture light area. It is a 69 chevelle. I was hopeing someone might know what causes this.The wire connector for the gas gauge has 3prongs and it looks like it has a wire wound resistor on the connector also.The guy that had the car before me did have the body off the frame for restoration.All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check Wes Vann's tech ref section off the Chevelle main page. He wrote a good troubleshooting guide for fuel gages. Maybe someone can post the link. Sounds like an open sender wire or sender ground.

This also happends when the gas tank ground wire or sending wire to the tank has been removed/cut. It's a pain in the rear, but if you can't find the short, drop the gas tank a few inches to check the wires.
