I went to the dollar store and bought a couple of water pistols ...pulled the filler cap out of the gun drilled a hole in the gas jug and put it in. Now when I pour the jug is vented and works like it should

the new gas cans were designed to comply with a law in california (where else?) to comply with some stupid new evaporative emissions laws or something like that. as far as i know, the old style cans are still legal everywhere else, but they aren't available because the companies that make them don't want to have to mess with having two different styles of cans, so they just sell the craptastic ones everywhere.

you can drill a hole in the can and fish a valve stem from a wheel in from thr bottom, remove the shrader valve, and you knowhave a vent. ive done this on a couple of mine, works pretty good

The fuel jugs that Jason mentioned are great. I have a red one for gas, and I just bought 2 yellow jugs for diesel fuel. I made a rack in my trailer, to hold them.
No tricky valves, or vents. Just loosen the vent cap, and pour it out threw the 10" long hose.
That's the very same type I have that I bought new at E-Town Bill, and I love it. VP makes a square one now too for easy storage. Being in NJ, we know that Red is the required color for gasoline here. IIRC, I paid about $22 for it, which included the hose, cap and plug.

I "misplaced" the white caps for the hose/tube twice and the plug for the large cap once a few times over the years, so I called VP and they sent replacements of them to me free of charge. :beers:

After I bought mine and was walking away, an older couple was buying a Purple one. I guess they were from another world somewhere. :D

we get 2.5 gallon plastic chemical containers at work with wide mouths. Granted they arent technically gas cans, but it works for me. I just use a funnel. Also never had any gas station say anything about me filling one either. I guess thats one good thing about self serve. jim

I'd still like to know why a hole that's designed to suck air IN, was emitting fumes. :clonk:

Well its when the cool gas gets warm it builds pressure and the can will vent. These new cans will swell to a great extent but what I don't get is when you open it the vapor escapes just like it did on the old ones, so whats the point ?
