I can only find Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo in 1 gallon containers. Is it available in quarts so I don't have to buy 2 gallons to get 5 quarts?

If you can't find in quarts and dont want to buy 2 gallons then why not just put one quart of a different brand oil in. You would still have 80% of the oil you wanted.

Mike, are either of those better oils to use in our Chevelles? I've been using Valvoline 10W30 for about 10 years in my 71, but since I only change the oil in it twice a year, if there is a better product, I will use it.

I had the same thought on the quarts this morning, at Walmart. They didn't have any, so I bought 3 gallons, as I'm going to be breaking in the new motor tomorrow on it, as soon as I can get ahold of some cam break-in lube of some type. Drove all over the place this morning looking for some, the one performance shop that sells it is out, and Napa has to bring it in from the warehouse. I'm half tempted to take the EOS part number down to the dealer here and ask again, but last time I asked for EOS there, I got a blank stare.

I picked up a gallon of the Shell Rotella today. No CI-4 designation on it any more. I just add some EOS for good measure. Our Fresh 355 only has about 100 miles on it so far. Everything is fine so far. I have good GM parts guys at Lindsay Pontiac, in Lindsay, Ontario. Might as well give good guys a good plug when you can. Les and Ross are the best.

Hmmmm, I know down here I buy oil in a FIVE QUART jug. Not a gallon jug. You should be able to find that up there, too. I'll stick to "old man thinking" on oil. For the last twenty years, I've been using Castrol 20W 50 in my hotrods. I never had sludge, I never had a problem with seals or wear. I'll stick with that, thank you.

I can say this for certain. It's not as important to change your oil every 3,000 miles, as it is to stay with the same type of oil. Additives in differant oils don't always mix well. Which contributes to sludge build up. That whole 'one odd quart of oil' is bad advice. If you choose to go with Rotella, stay with it. Same for Castrol or whatever brand you use. I see the differance in the engines I tear down all the time. If you go to what ever lube place is having a sale and get whatever they have there, I can almost guarentee that your engine has a least 1/4" of sludge in it. If you change the oil regularly with the same brand, you'll be much better off.

Thanks Alan. Most of the regular oil IS in 5 qts containers, just the Rotella and Chevron are in gallons. I ended up going with the Castrol GTX anyway as Scott Wheaton had tested it to 1900 PPM det lvls previously. My motor has roller rockers but I've never had it apart to know if it has a roller cam/lifters so I'm just trying to be cautious so I'll add a bottle of Red STP also.

Well, after waiting all morning 'til 10 a.m. to go pick up 4 bottles of Clevite branded cam break-in lube from Napa, I get there and they didn't have it in. The warehouse had just called, they had trouble finding it. So I stop by the Chevy dealership nearby, and the parts guy gives me hope, says they carry EOS. Then he comes back empty handed. Sold out, and they're not bringing it in anymore. :( Come home, look up the p/n for the new EOS, and call the Pontiac dealer down the road a bit, guy says they show one, but it's the old p/n. I asked him to go pull it. He does, then says his manager told him to give it to me cheap, because the bottle's old. Okay, I'll take it. $6.39 total. Had the kid check the other dealerships on island, he says the Chevy dealer in town has 5 bottles of the new formula, at $27.xx/qt.
