Hey everyone, I have heard some rumors about some of the deals which a few of the companies are trying to close. With Dodge having the cummings, they are some of the better diesel engines out there. Someone said that Ford was trying to get cummings and....Chevy is trying to sign a deal with caterpilar. I look forward to seeing these trucks and how well they stack up against eachother. Any truth to this of what I have heard??

I dunno about Chevy trying to get Cat but i do know that Ford in fact already owns Cummins. They have owned them for some time now and in fact if you step up from an F-350 to an F-450 (same body justs stiffer suspension) you can get a cummins in a Ford. My guess why Ford doesn't exploit Cummins more for themselves is that they either have some kind of deal with Dodge or they figure that they are selling enough of the motors to Dodge to make plenty profit while they are still selling their own Powerstrokes with great success. As far as the Chevy Duramax engine goes its no more than a glorified Isuzu diesel engine.

Better yet, it's a proven design in a lot of delivery trucks. Shouldn't be much trouble down the road with them. I've been toying with the idea of getting one someday.

There are different engines in the larger models aready, why not?
I've got me one of those glorified Isuzu diesel engine in my '05 GMC crewcab 4x4, it will smoke the tires and she will drag my Chevelle around on the trailer like a paper weight.
I love mine :)

If you want a CAT in a GM you can order it in their larger model lines same as Ford. FYI Diamler Corp owns Detroit Diesel Engine Corporation so why do they purchase Cummins Engines? Also the Powerstroke is a name given to Internationals standard 444E if I remember correctly.

Cummins made a deal that was cost effective for Dodge to keep using their engines for a few years. Proven design and reliability, along with a cheap price, rule over brand loyalty, I guess. Detroit does have the Series 40 engines standing at the ready to put in their trucks someday, but not now. The deal between Cummins and Dodge was back in '03. I'm not sure on how many years it's for.

I would expect Diam-Chry to go with a Diam diesel powerplant soon.
If they do, you can guarantee it to be an awesome piece. The E class diesel has got some serious torque, and is only .1 second slower to 60 than my E350 gasser. I have seen pics of some of Mercedes larger diesels, and they are awesome. A V6 turbodiesel is on the way, and quite possibly several others.

Those Isuzu delivery trucks also come with a 5.7L Chevy SB V-8,does that make the small block a glorified isuzu engine? As far as I know the Duramax diesel when it was first intro'd was a brand new designed GM motor.

Ford does not own Cummins. This rumor has been floating around for some time, at least 10 years. There was a period in the '90s were Ford bought about 10% of Cummins stock to help them through a tough time but that has since been sold back to shareholders.

You are right though int hat you can get a Cummins in the larger Ford models (Above a F350). Actually, it's the ISB, the same engine as put in the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 series pickups. Pretty stout engine for a pickup seeing as Ford uses it in their ultra heavy duty truck line.

I guess i may have been misinformed on the matter of Ford owning Cummins. i searched the internet and didn't find much to suggest either way but i would think you guys know more about this than i do. I'm sorry if i offended anybody when i called the duramax "no more than a glorified Isuzu engine." They have proven themselves to be great motors i meant for that to be degrading in no way except to say that chevy would never advertise that fact. These engines are much better than Chevy's numerous failures at developing their own diesel engine.

Umass, the newer Detroits are 4 stroke, like the Cummins. The older 53 series 2 strokes would be the only ones small and light enough to put into a light truck, and don't make that much hp in stock form. I did have a little 6v-53 with some N50 injectors and some governor tweaking that would no-load at 3k rpm's, and full load at 2850 or so. It was in a boat. That little engine would flat out scream. :D FWIW, they were supposed to be governed for about 2200 max. ;)

Yes its an Isuzu motor and its a damn good one. Other than the injector problem my techs tell that they never have any issues with the Duramax. That was corrected in mid 03 with the new LLY motor.

The 06 all get the new 6 speed Allison trans with the ability to manually shift up or down in the shift lever. There are two motors for 06 everything out there now and a std trans models will have the current LLY motor. Everything with the auto built from, about two weeks ago on will have the new LBZ HO Duramax. It has 360 HP and 650 Ft Lbs.
Here is a little info on it

My Colorado is basically an Isuzu. I dunno whether the I-5 is mainly a GM design or an Isuzu design. My transfer case has Isuzu stamped on it.
I don't really have a problem with that, the little Isuzu trucks, Troopers, and their commercial vehicles are known to run forever.

The 5 cyl motor in the Colorado is based on the trailblazer 6 cyl.Just lop off a cylinder and there you go.There's going to be a 4 cyl too.
