Funeral services for Medlen set for Wednesday
By Gary Graves, USA TODAY
Funeral services for NHRA driver Eric Medlen will be held Wednesday in Brownsburg, Ind., after a public viewing Tuesday night.
Medlen, 33, died Friday at Shands at the University of Florida medical center of complications from a closed head injury incurred when his Funny Car crashed into a guardrail while testing March 19 at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway. The six-time winner with John Force Racing and 2004's top rookie underwent surgery the next day but never regained consciousness.
"This loss is a huge blow not only to the Medlen family, but to drag racing and to John Force Racing," Force said in a statement.
This weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston will include several individual tributes to Medlen, considered one of drag racing's most popular drivers. He was honored with a moment of silence before Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup race in Bristol, Tenn.
"He was a good friend and a good guy, and we need more good guys like him in this sport," said Medlen's friend and Top Fuel driver J.R. Todd, among those who will wear a T-shirt remembering Medlen.
