I was wondering what the stock fuel line size would be on my 65 chevelle. I am going to be running almost 500 HP in my 454, and I am running a Holley mechanical pump. Do I absolutely need to change over to bigger fuel line? I will eventually, I am just wondering if I will be losing HP

thanks
Joe

You probably have a 5/16" line...not enough. A minimum of 3/8" would be needed to feed that. You may not NEED the 3/8" line but you'll starve the engine at anything other than light cruising I would imagine.

Hey Joe! Got that RAT running yet?

It would depend on what engine originally came in your Chevelle as to what size line you have. If it came with a six or a 283 it's probably a 5/16. If it came with a 327 it's probably a 3/8. If it's a 5/16 you can buy a 3/8 sending unit from any resto house like Ground Up and replace it very easily. You will have to plump new 3/8 inch line to the front of the car but you will need it with all that horsepower. I would highly suggest plumping it with hard line using no more than 12 inches of rubber in the whole system and protect the section that goes by the bellhousing with a steel wrap or outer covering just to be safe and meet NHRA rules. I think they require 18 inches of protection! Easier to do it now than have to redo it later when it fails tech inspection. Hope this helps!

I would use the existing line until you find that you need a bigger line. If you mostly just cruise, you won't need anything bigger than 5/16". If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
