It is a 1969 396 truck motor. Heads are open chamber 122cc also. Both castings indicate the year 1969 also. I don't think I would build anything performance out of it. I don't think those heads are for HP.
I havent run the numbers, but if it is a 69 396 then it is a fine basis for a performance engine. A 396 out of a truck is the same as a passenger 396. The heads, because they are cast with "truck" will be peanut port oval heads, good for low end torque but not for good use over 4500. Regular oval passenger heads are plentiful and cheap, so dont let that stop you. The only real "truck" engines were the 366 and a truck version of the 427, both of which were tall deck engines and had and extra compression ring. If the price is right grab it and build it.
