I used the ABC kit on our 66 Chevelle and very happy with it. I am sure you could figure out how to do it yourself, but sometimes paying a little more for something that has already been well thought out by someone else is worth it.

I would consider that ABC kit to be cheap in comparison to buying the plate and fabbing it yourself. Just the time saved would be enormous.

gbodydude, I am officially not lurking anymore just to reply to your thread. I have a 66 chevelle I am boxing right now, just finishing up on it. If you have the tools its not bad at all. I couldn't afford to spend the money on a kit. I got all my steel from fegalmans on the Morgan Hwy. They have basically everything there and they will cut it on the spot. The cost for the metal for the boxing of the rails not was literally under $20.00 for 1/4".

I went with the kit from HPI. Had a buddy weld it in along with welding up all the seams in the original frame. Here is a pic after welding & test fitting prior to black powdercoating.

Here's a pic of the rolling chassis after powdercoating and before everything came together.

In the end, I like the kit, even though some say it's overkill; it's still a compromise compared to a full cage, but I didn't want the cage in the interior. I think the whole kit was about $725 shipped to my door, if I recall (it was 18 months ago!).

Looks like we'll have to modify & re-powdercoat the trans cross member a bit to fit the Lemon's headers & new exhaust (vs. the Dynatech exhaust the HPI kit was designed for), but that's a minor detail at this point.

Here's where she stands right now (well - this is from May: we've since had to pull the valve train to fix a lifter issue, but this gets you the idea).

The frame is stock width in the rear. In hindsight I wish I would have narrowed it and mini-tubbed the body. Extra tire would've been nice in the rear as the rear end breaks loose way to easy.

I just finished installing the abc kit on my frame for my 65 300. Did all the work with a buddy of mine and then hand painted it with por15. Was very happy with it. We took our time and it turned out very nice. I mocked it up with a set of 305s off a buddys vette and having that extra room in the back is nice.

I like to box my 72'monte carlo frame.i was looking at a kit from abc performance.http://abcperformance.net/frame boxing kit.html.has any one use this frame boxing kit or is there a way to make my own kit?
it really not that hard to make your own. took me 2 weeknights to cut/testfit/ weld/and general weld clean up. and i am by no means a pro. steel is very cheap from any local steel yard. i think it costed me 60 bucks.

Absolutely! Great advise here! Steal is cheap to order or get compared to buying it already cut. Plus you may find other areas you would like to strengthen, now you have the metal to cut and fab pieces that don't come in a kit.

In January we will be releasing our new Frame FX kit for 68-72 A-body applications. It widens the frame to almost 6 inches in width for increased torsional and bending stiffness. It includes an additional body mount to stablize the floor and provides the maximum section width that can be fitted under the floor boards. Here are a couple of pics of it installed. Part number is 11100 and it should be priced around $350.
