Hey TC,

I have finally got my 70 Ragtop on the road and unfortunately, the frame near the steering box is pretty badly rotted. It was on the inside section of the frame and never really noticed it. Problem is that of course the whole front end is on the car and now I most likely need to replace the entire section of the frame rail.

Two quesitons:

1.) Is it a tough task to cut the rotted section of the frame out and replace it with a new section? Any advice on doing this right would be appreciated!

2.) Where can I find just the front left side section right past the spring perch section at? It's only rotted around the steering box so is it something that might be able to be plated?

Appreciate any advice or thoughts you can provde!

Thanks!
John

I would try repairing it using flat stock first before replacing a whole rail. I would pull the steering box, and clean the area with a sanding disk to see how much of it needs to be replaced. Are you able to post some pictures of the area here?

I agree with Tom, however, the piece behind the box isn't exactly flat, it has a roll in the middle of it. Still it might be easier to make the piece out of 1/8" flat stock. I don't have a piece of frame to use for a repair panel. Good thing is, the convert and coupe, and probably even a 4 door is the same in the area of the steering box. Maybe even Monte Carlo/Grand Prix too...

My 68 has the same problem. I was thinking of getting a piece of pipe the same radius as the frame, slicing it lengthwise to match the frame and then welding flanges on it to weld to the frame. Just my $.02.
