I just wanted to let you know that I have stumbled accross a paint stripping tool that I used to strip down both my upper control arms to bare metal. Took me about 20 minutes to do both of them.

I think its called a power stripper or easy stripper. I remember my dad had one when I was a little kid and that was about 35 years ago. They DO work though and it surprised me how easy and quick it took to strip all the old paint off of my control arms. This would lilkely work on a cars body to strip off the paint.

WOOHOOOO!

Ya...it is made with metal "fingers" or wire peices roughly half the width of coathanger wire. The one that I have i paid around 20 bucks for. If you go through 3-5 of them to do an entire car it would still save money in the long run based on time and materials. Trust me on this one guys....I SWEAR by this thing and it takes a LOT to impress me. Give it a whirl and make an investment. I'm gonna use this to strip the old paint off the bottom of my frame in a couple weeks.

Thats my goodwill special. I paid 1.99 for it and have used it continually for over 4 years. Never had a complaint. My other finds include Snap-On wrenches and sockets set for 4.99, a couple of circular saws for 1.99 each, and a donut machine i paid 5 bucks for and sold for 2900 bucks on ebay.

Yup, the Crud Thud is the king of the paint strippers. Mine floats between home and work these days, hate being without it on a job that could use it.

I am not sure where you can buy one but try your local walmart or ebay. They run anywhere from 5 bucks on up. I am personally going to invest in a half dozen or so just to make sure i have enough in case they become scarce. For the price its worth the investment.

that thing looks dangerous, eh ?
Not really. I ran it accross my fingers by accident and it only hurt a little bit. The drill is a Rockwell btw.

Has anyone else here used one of these before with similar results?
I can't see the picture (it's "temporarily unavailable"), but I assume that it's similar to the old "Roto Stripper" tool. I used this on a project many years ago, and it sure did the job. It could be pretty dangerous though, as the wires could break and get thrown off if you worked it too hard. Face shield, gloves and long sleeve shirt was a must. As a matter of fact, I think they had to take it off the market afterwhile.

But if they have solved that problem with this tool, it should be the way to go. Only other drawback I remember was that it could make an incredible mess, as it threw the crud everywhere. :)

I'd rather spend a little time sweeping up some broken peices of wire and "crud" then wearing out my forearms and body with extra effort. Anything that makes the job easier to do and takes a lot less time is well worth the investment as far as i am concerned.

Absolutely. What I'm saying is that you should be careful. I was able to see the picture of your tool now, and it looks very much like the one I had. Those wires are made of heavy gauge wire and if they come off, they could easily pierce your skin. Not to mention what they could do to your eyes. The ones I used had a really bad habit of throwing a wire or two when you least expected it. Be safe. ;)

I also forgot to mention that you dont have to push to hard to strip off the paint and crap. If you just feather the wire rods at the end of the wheel against the metal you will see it peel away like magic. I strongly suggest you pick one of these units up if you see one around. WELL worth the investment!

and YES I'm excited! :hurray: I will cut back on the caffeine!
