Hi Team Chevelle! :waving:

I got a F*rd question for you guys. I have a '73 302 engine with 2V Heads and 2-bbl Intake. I want to put a 4-bbl intake and carb on it, will this intake work with my 2V heads?

thanks,
wes

I think the problem here is that 2-barrel motor Ford heads are so darn small port and valve-wise that you will probably be better off converting everything over to the 4-barrel topend IF your CR. doesn't end up too low!!

Ford Windsor SBs aren't nearly as user friendly as our SB's are!!!

AND I think the Ford Cleveland SB's are even worse??

But imho, both are good motors tho..

I can't remember what was allowed in terms of Cleveland heads on a Windsor block. I do remember something about a water passage needing to be made. As far as the Windsor heads, there was a 4-barrel high compression 351 made in '69 only. It would be ideal, but good luck finding a set. Perhaps 289 HiPo stuff? I've also heard that you can machine the Windsor head to use Chevy valves (seriously!) to your advantage. I don't know what to say about GT-40 stuff. Perhaps a Mustang forum could give you the skinny (hey, what can you say about Chevelle people giving you advice other than they're a class act?). Even basic 351 Windsor 2-barrel heads would be an improvment over the regular 302 heads, and they are way easier to find.

The 5.0 started using a 4-barrel around '84 through '86, so there may also be some other avenues there.

Those Ford guys have it rough. FoMoCo simply does not allow for obsolete part numbers from a previous decade.

If I remember right, the Aussies make some GOOD 302 motor hi-po heads/top ends for their "down under" Country guys.

You might check into this b/c I think they are very good and should be what could be termed stock. It would just be a hassle getting them here but I even think there are distributors for them in the Ford Camp

the 302 is neither cleveland (big block) or windsor (small block). I believe you are thinking of the 351. the 302 is a straight forward small block, (same firing order as the chevy 350 if you relabeled the cylinders. (HO version). the "best heads ford ever made", buy a set of gt40 heads if you care that much.
all 302 heads are 2 valve. the new 4.6 in the mustang gt is a 3 valve set-up. whole new discussion. as far as explorer heads, same deal as chevy vortec truck and pass. car. go with some off a fox body rustang. if you need some, let me know. i use them as tire chocks.

Ford made it tough for their enthusiasts..
the "best" production Windsor heads were the already mentioned Exploder heads- they are to the small block Ford what the Vortecs are to the small block Chev- but the exhaust ports are laid out slightly different than a normal Windsor head, so header/manifold fitment might be iffy.
but any 302 intake will bolt to any Windsor heads on any 302.
if you are looking for decent neads for a mild 302, look for the E7TE heads that were used on late 80's efi trucks, and attack the exhaust ports with a die grinder to get rid of the AIR bumps..
