I have a 396 just installed in chevelle. It has a new holley 750 on it. Motor has 1000 miles on it and came out of another chevelle. What are some causes of flames shooting out of carb under hard quick throttle. Timing is set at 4 degrees. thanks.
I am assuming that your timing is 4 degrees initial? I'm surpised the car idles at all.
First set your timing around about 35 total just to get a baseline and then see what the car does.
Based on your other post, I am also assuming that this car hasn't really been driven......usually flames poppin out is a sign that the distributor is in a tooth off.

The car idles just fine, and then you touch the gas, and voila, it's time to roast marshmallows? Yep, a crossed wire. Re-check your spark plug wires, and I'll bet you there's one crossed somewhere. Fix it, and motor on!
