Ok, finally got the stuff prepped, and started to fit everything in. The inner well and outer well actually went very well. Seemed to fit right in. The drop off fit fairly well, only a little larger gap in one area I can fill.

The problem is the quarter. The drop off seems to be pushing the quarter further away from the body and not lining up worth a crap. Also, the bottom of the quarter, forward of the wheel has a lip that sits on the rocker. That lip is in the way of the outer well and they don't match. Has anybody else had to cut off part of the lip (roughly 3 inches) to make it fit? I am now wondering if the well I have is correct since the body lines are not right. Here is a pic...

Welcome to the aftermarket. And people wonder why the resto guys charge so much. Some of the bill is for mental help when done. Anyway, yes i have cut a few quarter lips to make it fit. There is a lot of relief cutting and massaging. Is the dropoff already welded? You might have to make a couple relief cuts. What about the well? there are relief cuts in that area also. I personally never weld anything unless i have every part screwed together first. Biggest mistake to make is to weld the well, then the drop, and then see the quarter fits like hell. Never weld this stuff unless you screw everything first.Screw the well to the car, then screw the drop and then the quarter. This way you can make adjustments without cutting anything loose.Try to see what is holding you up before you cut the lip though. It might look like the lip needs sliced but get the quarter fitting right and you might see you dont have to cut the lip. These parts are not as bad as most make it out to be. Take your time. I cant tell is this a full unit?

Looks like you might have to cut the well and drop loose or at least cut some reliefs. I bet you already welded that stuff didnt you? If you did no problem just slice it off and redo it. Time consuming but it will need be if you want a quality repair. Good Luck. And i got your PM. Come and see my work!

Ok, nothing is welded...I got that part right., The well (inner) and drop offs are screwed and clamped. I've been listening to you, trust me, on not welding anything.

Eric, I'll pay for your gas for the help. You're only an hour away. Hell, I'll even buy good beer instead of the cheap stuff I normally drink<G>

sounds great to me. the car is at my shop as well, RV repair center, anyway, from Tampa to Englewood is only 1- 1.5 hours. I drive to McDill every now and then to do some cheap shopping...retired military has it's bennies....

I did find out where I went wrong on the outer well.....when cutting the quarter off, I inadvertanly (read stupid) cut off the end of the outer rocker pane. Now I've cleaned it up and am setting up to tack it back in place. Might make the wells line up better if it's installed<G>

Ok, update after only 1 day. I have the quarter in, drops in, and wells all screwed and clamped. It took some cutting, pushing, shoving, and of course, cussing but it came out pretty well. I'm sure bondo will help with some areas, but overall I'm pretty happy. I'll continue to screw it together tomorrow and hopefully start tacking it on Monday. Here are some pics!

I just came back from florida. Ocala, pinellas park and fort lauderdale. I could have swung(is that a word?) by and helped ya but it looks like you have it. But listen to me dude, since you have it that far make it as perfect as possible. Hell with the mud metal work that thing even though you may have limited "metal" working skills, it sure doesnt look like it. Make it as perfect as possible. It should only take another day or two making it absolute! Its worth the extra effort and it already looks pretty good. BTW, i love that itsa 69.

On the right road Jeff

To heck with previous comments of limited skills previously mentioned.

With a little time and patients you will get it the way YOU want it I am sure.
Didnt quite come out as planned. It does look as a pro did it. I just meant since its this far forget the mud like he mentioned and try to metal work it as much as possible. Hell he is doing as good as i would. I edited it as it looked aweful. Jeff you are doing as good as job as most. Cant wait to see it in primer and color.

No problem Mike

Since your the expert check out mine on the "68 Post Progress or NOT?" post.

I have never done major tear downs & rebuilt from ground up before, so feedback is welcome.

So as I mentioned, I think Jeff is on the right road from what I have encountered so far.

hey good job.sometimes you just have to talk nasty to them:D.from the looks of it you souldn't need much mud at all other than the roof joint.I've learned with this project to just walk away sometimes and try again later.looks like your time has been well spent.just finished bolting mine back to frame and messing with the door gaps.getting closer by the day as are you.

Expert! $h*t i wish. Just a novice and body shop owner. there is really nothing to this stuff. I will get flamed for this remark but i have done this stuff for many years and the only good advice i can give is take your time. There is no magic. It all depends if you want to do it. Really, thats it. And of course certain facilities and there are make shift ones at that. There are some very good metal workers on here and else where but i think with the basic know how anybody can do it. I have been to shows where owners have paid and dont care to tell, alot of dough for alot of crap. I have seen some very good backyard regular Joes do show cars. I have every certification known to man but they are just pretty. I only keep them because of my Paint Warranties. Anybody can read and take a test but experience has the checkered flag. Most Advance and Auto Zone workers have master ASE but we wont go there. Jeff, looks great. If this your first job then you are doing great. Keep the welds spaced out because of shrinkage and oil cans. Solder those joints if possible, or lead if you wish. If not duraglass will do. Epoxy everything also.

Looking good there. I know the feeling of wanting to get the quarter on. Make sure you check every single gap twice. After putting the glue on mine and getting it secured into place, I noticed there was a gap along the rocker that was off. By the time I noticed it, the glue was already set and nothing I could do about it. Not a huge deal though, maybe sits up 3/16 higher than the factory. Just make sure you are 100% happy with it and then start tacking if you plan on welding it. I used all glue on my 1/4 panel and it's tough as nails.

Doen't look like you will need any filler from the pics. Looks like a good repair, probably better than most places would charge you. I had that same issues with the wheel housing lip. You really had to push it to get it to sit on the housing. It could have been brought in about another 3/8" but I doubt anyone will notice it, only me. I guess that is the bummer about doing all these repairs, you know every single problem area on the car.

What did you put over the holes that have glue in them from holding it on?

Thanks for all the comments, guys. It certainly helps to keep me going since I can only work roughly 8 hours per week on the car if lucky. I plan on tweaking, pushing, pulling more until it's exacly as I want. I told one body guy who offered to do it that I wanted as little to none in the bondo dept as possible. I was originally going to do a skin, but was talked out of it due to the amount of bondo potential

Thanks again, and soon on to the other side!
