This past time I got the rockers down too tight. A pal came over and looked them over; he tightened them down until the rockers stopped moving back and forth, didn't spin the pushrods... Then a half turn. Works OK now...

Clint no & dbl no!!!!!!

Guy's,be carefull what your suggesting when it comes to oils & oil additives with proper zddp lvl's for hi perf flat tappet cam breakin & for ongoing post breakin protection too.

1) sheel rotella 15w-40 cj rated oil mfg post 2001 doesn't have enough zddp anymore for safe hi perf flat tappet cam protection anymore,it approx 1050ppm when i had it tested.

2) also,i had comps oil additive tested ,came in very low on zinc ,approx 950ppm zinc for breakin addive but for example gm eos and cranes lube had 5,500-6,000ppm zinc which is needed for breakin in.

There's also lucas new tb zinc breakin lube /cam shiled/etc.

As for oil/brk in oil there's chevrons delo 15w-40 (1300ppm zddp for mild perfcams) or for hotter perf cams there's valvolines vr1 race oil's with 1400ppm zddp, spectro's motor guard hi perf oils with 1,800ppm zddp (summits new hi perf oil for flat tappet cam's with 1,800 zddp appears to be the same oil),pennzoils gt race 25-50 oil with 1800+ppm zddp,rp's breakin oil ,joe gibbs breakin oil with approx 2,800ppm zddp,cen-pe-co race oils with approx 2500ppm zddp or std perf oils with approx 1600ppm zddp, etc.

Since you're talking about adjusting valves and putting the balancer back on, I'm guessing the cam is already in there. What did you use on the lobes of the cam? Did you use the red Comp break in lube on the lobes?

Clint,if memory serve's me right i fairly recently sent you or someone else named Clint all the info along with the oil & oil additve list too to use for your new flat tappet cam install.

And if thats correct i am curious why you bought the shell oil and comp cams oiladiditve i specifically state not to use in that info i sent you?

And would be dbl curiuos if you also used comps red assembly lube that i also suggest not to use as mentioned above.

On the valve adjustment I adjust the arm till i feel the pushrod have a slight reistance when you turn it. As your tightening it down at first move the push rod up and down till it has no slop in it. You can go beyond this point anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 more down but I prefer to stop at zero gap with my roller rockers. I like that setting and the motor acts alot more snappier when you stab the gas. Start at number one and do each cyl at a time thru the firing order.

I just fired up a fresh 454 last week, used rotella T with lucas additive. Also used moly paste on the cam and lifters. When I prelubed the motor it took prob about 4-5 minutes of constant rotation to get the oil up to the rockers. Hope you have a good heavy duty drill, the first two I tried ended up smoking bad! Had to get out the Dewalt high torque low RPM drill, worked great. I broke in the cam and everything seems good. Still have to adjust the valves, have alot of noise. Cam is Lunati 60304 hydralic.

Sorry, forgot to add, the oil pump primer I have has the added collar on it to simulate the distributor. Without this I believe that maybe only one side of the upper end will get oil. Maybe someone can jump in and verify this. Does your primer have a collar or just a straight shaft?

Did you turn the crank a little bit at a time while you were prelubing it ??? It takes quite a while to get oil to all the rockers. If your oil pressure is up,you're probably good to go.
