The missiz had two new tires put on the rear of the van while I was away.

As I was putting stuff in the back I noticed the left rear wheel had a big gouge in the center, and also around the rim. Damn! I checked the other side and damn, same thing! The fronts, while not perfect, are pretty darn good for stock wheels on a 6 year old family car. I know all four looked the same before she took it in.

Went right to the Firestone that did the work and said "you guys have a problem".

The manager is supposedly going to call me tomorrow.

I mean, really? How long have cars been coming with aluminum wheels?

I'd settle for a used pair in the same condition as the others. That is, after all, what they wrecked - a 6 year old used pair of wheels in reasonable shape.

Put Centerlines on a '70 SS in '76.

The goofus air-gunned a lug nut till it snapped the stud, and he spun a deep long curley-que gouge across the aluminum wheel's face with the broken jagged stud still in the air-gun.

He immediately stuck his fingernail into the gouge and said:

"Ahhh...you'll be able to polish that out.
If you'll get me another stud, I'll install it
for you tomorrow...or do you want to
go ahead & just run it with 4 lugs?"

[The rest of the story is not suitable for family-viewing.]

Good luck.

Buddy of mine painted his wheels for his Skittle, did it properly and had a good 30 hours in them (overkill vs. under-kill), took them to one of the local garages to get some tires swapped. Got the wheels back with the paint gouged to hell and marks in the metal from the head on the tire machine. Didn't use the polymer head and their stance was "they were already like that."

Needless to say, after a quaint chat the issue was resolved.

Yeah, they should work with you on getting them fixed.

I work at a tire shop, and we deal with new/inexperienced techs all the time doing stupid stuff, even some of our more experienced ones do something stupid.

I had a guy come in the other day and bought some 295/30/22's for a truck. Of course any tire in that size are a bear to mount, low profile rubber bands with hard sidewalls. Well three of them went on fine, the last one they were having trouble with so they switched tire machines.... They forgot to put the polymer heads on the other machine and gouged 4 nice grooves in the inside barrel of the rim from the holding clamps... Of course the company that makes it is out of business, and the wheel is discontinued/impossible to find used. We did out dilligence trying to get it polished/rechromed, but no chrome shops in our area do wheels anymore, and the one place that did wanted to bend us over a barrel because they knew we were in a bind... Eventually ended up turning it over to our insurance company in house and they are handling it from there, they guy will probably get a cash value for the dmg or a new set of wheels for a negotiated cost.

I hope so. I stopped in on Friday about closing time and I have yet to hear from them.

We got a letter last week from the manager thanking us for the business. So I know who is going to be the target of my ire if I don't hear from them today :)

Years ago, I had a 67 Fairlane, beautiful car, rode over to Firestone to have some eagle's put on. I get my car back and the next a.m. headed off to work with my new pride and joy, as I'm heading down the grade, my car starts doing 360's at about 70 m.p.h., somehow was able to keep it out of the center divider and come to a stop in the center lane during rush hour.

some how I was able to retrieve the drive tire from the center divider, and slam it back on the car without anybody being killed, lost two deluxe hubcaps.... Pulled into Firestone and explained what happened, at first they didn't want to hear it, I threatened a lawyer and they put the car on the lift and found all lug nuts were never cinched down. I told them they needed to make this right, or I'd have my lawyer all over them. They tightened all lugs while I watched, then ordered the wrong hubcaps, and I made them order the right ones. I never dealt with Firestone again.

I have a decent tire shop I've been dealing with for decades now, but have seen time after time of my daughter, friends, and family screwed over by tire shops. I spent two hours this weekend chewing threw a lug nut that was shredded by some guy with a impact wrench.

If I can't stand by the bay and watch them, I go somewhere I can.

Sorry about your rims, I hope they make it right...
