I was wondering if anyone has had a finger cut off? I had an accident and lost a finger and was wondering how long it will take to get use of it to do the things I enjoy? I'm having a hard time griping and closing my hand.

Re: Finger Loss

the joke around here is, years back, i had a tragic "computer accident". what happened was, we got new computers on hydralic tables. we got everything set up, and i reached under the table to adjust the height. problem was, they forgot to fill the piston with fluid, so i took the full force of the weight of the computer on my thumb, between two metal plates. flattened my thumb like a cartoon. split my it wide open, inards everywhere. took 15 stitches on the inside and 18 on the outside. i thought that as soon as i was out of the cast, i'd be fine. cast came off and i couldn't move my hand at all. six weeks of electro shock, deep sonar, and heat therapy, and it got better. took several more weeks to get about 85% range, and that's the best it got. i was pretty lucky. we had a guy come in with a button threw his finger. he was hanging drop ceiling, and fell off the ladder, catching the end of his finger on a hanger, pulled the ligament clear out of his hand, he couldn't reach the ladder and had to stand with his ligament stretched 5' in the air, and wait for somebody to come and right the ladder, so he could climb up and unhook the ligament. makes me shudder everytime i remember the story. hang in there, it gets better, the longer you go to therapy.....

Re: Ring Getting Caught

Sorry, I didn't think anyone would have replied. I figured I would make it a little simpler. I'll to put it the way it was. Or close to it. Man that had to hurt, and I thought mine was painful.

Re: Ring Getting Caught

Was working with a guy once who didn't get caught but got zapped when his ring shorted a hot contact inside a big commercial printer. He was lucky in that he wasn't grounded to anything; his finger was seriously injured but he was otherwise unhurt. I was a young engineer in training at the time and since then I have never worn anything other than a watch while working, and I usually keep the watch in my pocket.

Re: Ring Getting Caught

Kurt, It happend three weeks ago. I was operating a tractor and was climbing out of the cab and had my hand on roof. Their just happen to be a bolt sticking out for a spot light and when I jumped down my wedding ring got caught and stripped the skin off to my nail. It broke the bone and pulled the joint apart. The only thing holding my finger on was the tendons. The worst part was that we were working in the country and couldn't find a hospital. It took an hour to get to a hospital. The accident happened at 5 pm and I didn't go into surgery until 2:30 am. I think the most painful part is when they gave me the local shots to numb it (twice).

Edit: Forgot to mention, they had to remove it to the palm. Couldn't save it, arteries were stretched and torn beyond repair.

1BLCAKHARLEY, How long has it been since and do you get any pain now.

yes, i still get shooting pains from time to time, and a couple times a day, it has a mind of it's own, and does what it wants, twitches, jumps, shakes, etc...makes me fell, like quite the spaz....it's been going on for about nine years, and the fact that i now have degenrative arthritus, just compounds the issue. but you get used to it, and you learn to deal with it, and after what i saw people go threw in therapy, i figured, i'd just stop my whining, and learn to live with it. nothing like watching a lady, that now has toes for fingers, learning to re-establish dexterity in her hands, and to learn to walk, to bring you back to reality.....

Has your Dr. sent you to physical therapy? If your Dr. has not and you are having issues with griping, making a fist, swelling, stiffness, etc. then request orders for therapy from your Dr. Hand/finger injuries are very involved and usually need therapy due to the complexity of their anatomy and fucntion. Plan on it taking awhile, possible 3-6 months to start feeling "normal" with consistant therapy (in the clinic and at home), otherwise it will take longer and possibly less progress without therapy. A lot of this depends on the severity of the injury, such as true loss of a finger with a stump remaining versus finger reattachment or tendon/ligament/nerve repair. There are always those that do okay without therapy but the percentage isn't as high with hand injuries, and hopefully your time frame will be shorter than what I said above. Just some general guidelines for you. Good luck!

Re: Ring Getting Caught

Thanks Jamie, Yes, I did see a therapist and she gave a list of excercises to do at home. I have been doing them alot. I don't want any limited use of my hand because I didn't do the therapy. I'm sure like 1BLACKHARLEY said it will always remind me it's not there.

1BLACKHARLEY, They have me doing some excercise, but I was wondering about that heat therapy you mentioned.

i agree with jamie. do a follow up with the doc. i think you should have more than pysical therapy. you cut muscle, nerves, ligaments, tissue, etc. the therapy that seemed to do the most good, was, they would smear some junk on my thumb, and use this thing, that would internally heat my hand. after that, my thumb would be more moveable, and comfortable. i hated the electro thearpy, and pysical was tough, but at the end when they used the heat thing, that's when it all came together. i went for about three weeks without therapy, thinking i could get it to work on my own. if i would have went ealier, i might have got back more mobility, and had less pain. again, talk to your doc, and maybe they'll step up the level of therapy your getting...

Re: Ring Getting Caught

My friend's father was an elevator mechanic in NYC. Not long after he got married, he was working on an elevator and his ring got caught in one of the cables as it was going up. He had only a second or so to get it loose or risk losing his whole arm. He yanked his arm loose just in time. Everything was still there. He immediately pulled his wedding ring off and threw it down the elevator shaft. This was in the early 70's and he never wore a wedding band again until about 5 years ago. He now runs that company and has been married for 30+ years.

Good one kevin:). You never know what can happen. It was just an accident. It's one of those things that you go over in your head trying to figure out if you should have done something different to avoid what happened. Got to move on. Looks like the car is going to be on hold for awhile. On the bright side I have an excuse not to do all those honey do's my wife is on me for.

Buddy of mine also lost his ring finger. He was going down a ladder, and the second step from the bottom he decided to jump down. Well, the ring caught something (don't remember what it was) and pulled the finger off at the 3rd joint (to the palm).

I'm a machinist, and the last time I wore my wedding ring was on the day I got married. I know I should wear it when I'm not working, but I'm a creature of habit. Thankfully, my wife understands.

I'm almost 100% positive that if I wore my ring at work, the finger would be gone by now. 22 years and not a trip to the hospital, knock on wood.
