I'm in the middle of swapping in a new small block and am using new solid mounts and needed to use mount shims so the trans and block would line up.

Unfortunately this moved the fan up enough where the plastic shroud hits the fan up top, and without major surgery the shroud can't be modified to move nay higher. i tried to see if a smaller fan would fit but the biggest I could use is a 16" fan which is too small for the shroud opening...

I ordered this shroud from GoodMark and tried it.. http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/c...cept-ac-or-hd-cooling-steel-4030-310-641.aspx

It gave me the room I needed to move it up on the radiator but it seems very shallow..only 2 inches in depth and it looks like there are notches in the shroud up and down like there needs to be a spacer of some sort between the radiator and the shroud...is that the case???

I don't think I can get the flex fan deep enough into the shroud without hitting the radiator in this configuration. I'm using a Champion 3 core Aluminum radiator, not a stock radiator.

I've seen Impala radiator shrouds similar to the metal one I ordered where the shroud seems to be much deeper.... Other than the depth, is hte dimensions of this shroud the same???

The only other options are either using one of those universal chrome half shrouds that mount through the radiator core (which I'm not sure work as well cooling wise because of the open bottom) or to byte the bullet and go electric, which I don't really want...

Even if I go electric, because I had to switch to a long water pump (timing cover was too thick for the short pump) only certain electric fans will fit. The Ford Contour fan seems to be a viable solution if it's shallow enough or a couple of 12 inch fans right off the radiator might work (I staggered a 14" and a 12 inch fan and I think they fit too...that might be a better idea...)

Any thoughts on the metal shroud or trying to get another setup to work?? This engine swap has been a royal pain..nothing has fit :angry::angry::

I don't understand the need to shim your engine mounts. Transmission has only 1 mount at tailshaft, and alignment to the block is governed by dowels. You shouldn't need to shim anything to mate things up, and shimming may change driveline angle enough to cause unwanted vibration. Get rid of shims, use correct engine mounts and your fan/shroud problem goes away.

What he said...
Why are you shimming up the engine? Going to mess up your driveshaft front ujoint angle, among other things.

Your first sentence is your problem. You have the wrong mounts and its screwing everything up. Get that fixed and your fan problem goes away. If you don't fix your motor mount issue, this problem will continue to come up in areas you're not even thinking about right now. Bo.

I got Moroso #62500 mounts and the #62535 shim kit. According to Moroso's site #62500 is the correct one for a 67 Chevelle with a small block.

I'm swapping in a TH350 so I'm not sure if that matters or not.

One thing that may be suspicious is that I got a new transmission mount from Energy Suspension...Part 3-1108G. According to Energy Suspension that also is the correct part # for a 67 Chevelle. They don't list the transmission however... Again wonder if the TH350 is different enough from the Powerglide where this would be off some.... The bolts we got for it were too short and seemed like the wrong thread for the application too??? We ended up using the old existing bolts and those worked fine. Wondering now if the wrong trans mount was sent or what... The mounting orientation was correct...but perhaps it was/is too tall???

We had to shim the block up to mate with the transmission..the transmission was higher, so I'm guessing the trans mount may be the issue. I may look to get another one and see if that solves the issue.

You may indeed have the wrong transmission mount, but shouldn't require shims on the engine mounts. The tranny will pivot enough on its mount to align with block dowels without need for shims. I've had the tailpiece hard against the floorboard on a 67 and able to mate up to a smallblock. Start over, mate the engine to the tranny and swing them in together using mounts the same dimensions as OEM. You do not need shims.

This is solid advice.

On the off chance this isn't correct the problem, there may be extra mounting holes on your radiator that will allow you to move the radiator up or down an inch. I installed an aftermarket plastic shroud on mine for which I had to raise the radiator to get it to clear. No drilling or anything required. I just used another existing set of factory holes.
