I put a junkyard clutch fan in my '67 Impala, and I'm just wondering how tight the clutch should be when it heats up. I took the little spring off the front and turned the shaft all the way and the fan still spun, although it did feel somewhat tighter. Is it supposed to lock up completely when hot?

no, not completely. when it gets hot enough you should be able to hear the fan making noise as it comes up near engine speed.

We used to judge them by whether or not they stopped with the engine when they were hot enough to be engaged.
