Ive just finished the gauge conversion on my 72 and am at my whits end with this tachometer.
The tach works well with the headlights or wipers on but when they are off it reads 200-500rpm low(increases with time) and flutters abit above 2000rpm. I have added grounds all over the place behind these gauges to no avail.
I ran the one from the headlight switch to gauge housing then from the housing to the wiper switch and then from the switch to the dash frame. I have also grounded three wires in the harness to the dash frame and e-brake bracket. Im getting fraustrated because I feel Im missing something obvious. I need cooler heads to prevail and give me some more ideas.
Help!!!

Try adding a test wire from the (-) or ground terminal of the tach to the battery (-) terminal. See if that changes anything.
