My car has a factory tach and is not hooked up. it does have a knee knocker that works.
my question is how can i find out how to hook it up?
or how can i test it,to see if it works?
The dist. Is an HEI type.

You will need to remove the dash pad. There will be a multi contact connector on the back of the cluster. One of the wires will be dark brown. That wire was, from the factory, routed through the firewall and connected to the coil. If you can find that wire connect it to the TACH connector of the HEI dist cap. You can check under the hood for the brown wire before removing the dash pad. If you find it and connect it and the tach works great. If not pull the dash pad check that the brown wire is connected to the connector, that the printed circuit card is not damaged, that you have 12 V on one terminal of the tach and that the tach is grounded. If the tach has power, is grounded, is getting the pulse signal and doesn't work the tach is bad.

i will give it a look over the weekend,and let you know what happens.
if i find the brown wire, can i hook it up to the tach that is working now?
