I recently saw a restored '70 SS396 that had resonators at the tail pipe ends just behind the Chevelle "Oval Tips". Were these just for sound or a real performance thing? What do they do to the sound (more bark, more mellow - what)? Were they offered on '72's.

I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the resonators were available (Stock, i think) on all 70-72 SS's. They helped quite down the sound a little bit, and make it deeper and more mellow.

Many dual exhaust and large-diameter single exhaust (L30/327) '66 Chevelles came with resonators, as did most fullsize '65-'69 Chevies with dual exhaust (not on L72s though).
